Old Saybrook Youth & Family Services Commission Meeting
                                            Minutes February 7, 2017; 5:30 pm

Call to Order
Chairman Barnes called the meeting to order at 5:40 pm.  He welcomed attendees.

Chairman Barnes led the pledge of allegiance.

Comments from the Public   None

Review and Approval of Minutes
A motion made by Ms. Tiezzi to approve the minutes of January 3, 2017, was seconded by Mr. Paradis and was so VOTED with 1 abstention.

Chairman’s Comments  
Chairman Barnes welcomed everyone.

Director’s Report
Ms. McNeil thanked everyone for coming.

  • Governor’s Prevention Partnership – E3’
Kiwon talked about the program for Alcohol Abuse with Teens.  There are 8 students on the state-level council and 2 are from Old Saybrook.    Ms. McNeil noted that E3 is part of the program.  There was a E3 component at YAC, which meets on Wednesday nights.

Ms. McNeil noted that on March 14th she and students will attend a Board of Education meeting.

  • YAC and Cardboard Community: Legacy Project:  Mr. Ledwith is heading up the “Cardboard Community” ….Teen homeless issues.  Date is April 28th.
YAC will explore the Parent Component at the Grace Episcopal Church 2/28 6:00 – 7:30.  

Youth Leadership meeting 2/6; this meeting will get students to interact with new students.

Board of Finance meeting: Ms. McNeil, Director of Y&FS will sit before the board of finance to discuss her budget after this meeting.

Ms. McNeil touched on the following:
  • Summer Programming:  Kiernan O’herlihy will work part time at Y&FS this summer.
  • Y&FS will be doing Movies at the Beach; 7/21;  7/28;  8/4;
  • Trips with Park & Rec.;
  • After School Club – Theater activities; Ms. McNeil hires college students; The Lion King show will be July 7th and 8th.
  • In May, 2017 the outside of the building will be painted.
  • OS Early Childhood Council; 2/9 meeting at Goodwin School; helping parents with language barriers;
  • Possible idea/Eagle Scout Project: The Little Library; drop off / take out books.  Go on “The Little Library” website for more information;
  • Connecticut Trails Weekend: Park & Rec will sponsor a hiking event at Great Cedars the weekend of June 4th.  There will be a small loop for young children who will participate.
  • YAC students went to Public Health Nursing Board meeting and answered questions for the board.  YAC students received a grant.
