Director’s Report for YFS Commission 5/1/2012 Heather reported that the Community Varity Show is scheduled for Friday, May 4th at OSHS 6:30 p.m. and that the tickets now are available for seniors at a discounted price. As part of the Summer Programs and Events: Summer Stock Theatre will present “Beauty and the Beast.”; Movies on the Beach will be July 13, 27 and
August 17, REACH will sponsor one of the nights; Community Service weeks will consist of two programs, Hunger Awareness and Environmental Stewardship for 7th to 12th graders; there are 10 or 11 Trips for Teens with Park and Rec and the Wilderness Challenge orientation is scheduled for May 10th 7:00 p.m. at the OSMS. Two names for the Personal Achievement Awards have been recommended by the OSHS Guidance department. They are Max Tarbell and Beth Murdy. A motion was made by Peggy Viggiano to accept these two student recommendations, seconded by Diane Aldi-DePaola. Ayes 6, Nays 0, Abstentions 0, Motion carried unanimously. The Community Conversation held its last meeting on April 25th. It was attended by 12 to15 people. There were representatives from all four of the working groups that were formed at the last conversation. Each rep. reported back on the work their group has been doing to move these initiatives forward. Heather reported that the director of Clinton YFS, Peter Schulteis, had inquired as to whether or not families from other towns could be seen at OSYFS for counseling ( for insurance or self-pay) and vice versa. There was discussion by the Commission and services at OSYFS will remain bound by the residency requirement. The Foundation and Essex Savings Bank Community Investment Program has Old Saybrook Youth and Family Services Foundation in the top 10 recipients of customer votes. Vice Chair Jen volunteered to inquire about any past funds donated specifically for OSYFS programs and services. Youth and Family has one new intern from Fordham University, four continuing through the summer (Southern, Liberty, St. Joe’s), and one new intern starting in August from CCSU. Regarding the budget, Linda’s hours will go to 37.5 and Chelsea Graham will go from 25 to 30
starting July 1st. Heather handed out a flyer titled: “Alcohol and Dating Safety: You’re in Charge”. This is a free two-session workshop for mothers and daughters. The first session is on May 9th, the second is on May 16th and both will be held at the Pavilion at Saybrook Point from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
