MINUTES

Present: First Selectman Michael Pace, Selectman William Peace, Selectman Carol Manning, Treasurer Bob Fish, Public Works Director Larry Bonin, Fire Chief JT Dunn, Town Planner Christine Nelson, members of the press.


I.
CALL TO ORDER – First Selectman Pace called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – First Selectman Pace led those in attendance

COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC – None Present

COMMENTS FROM THE SELECTMAN
First Selectman Pace asked Public Works Director Larry Bonin to give an update on the cleanup after Hurricane Irene; All roads are open, there are five spots on wires, Schoolhouse Bokum and Spencer Plains Roads. He cautioned everyone to be careful of downed power lines as they may be energized.
Fire Chief Dunn stated that the department went out on 60 calls since 7:00 a.m. Saturday. Between 7:00 a.m. Saturday and 7:00 p.m. Sunday 54 firefighters went out on 34 calls. He anticipates their total expenses to be about $6,800.
Going door to door it took six hours and 15 minutes to distribute evacuation notices to the beach areas Saturday Morning.
The Fire Department provided 550 meals for all town personnel, Fire, Police, Public Works, Emergency Management and Administration who worked though the Hurricane.
There have been seven furnace problems since power restoration.
Emergency Planning worked! Approximately 100 people took advantage of the shelter at the High School. Meals were provided by the School Food Service. Custodians were on staff. There were two nurses, Heather McNeil, Director of Youth and Family, Sue Consoli, Social Services Director as well as staff from the Health District.
Over 600 have taken showers at the High School. There are people taking advantage of the “Charging Station” to charge their cell phones and laptops at the High School. Sergeant Mike Gardener was thanked for his overseeing the Office of Emergency Management. There are photographs on the Fire Department website www.oldsaybrookfire.com.
Bob Fish stated that he really appreciated the CTAlert phone calls that kept everyone informed of what services were available and where.
The Selectmen thanked the residents for working together. A letter will be drafted to be published in the press.
Town Treasurer Bob Fish stated that he has setup a separate off-budget account that is auditable and submit it to our insurance company.
V.

B.      Discuss and act on contract with “The Lawrence Associates” for Structural Analysis of the Old Saybrook Police Station, 225 Main Street, Old Saybrook.

Motion to approve contract with “The Lawrence Associates” for Structural Analysis of the Old Saybrook Police Station, 225 Main Street, Old Saybrook and authorize First Selectman Michael Pace to sign same.

      2. Ethics Commission. Reappointment.  Kerry Knobelsdorff; this is a 4-year term due to expire 9/2015.

      3.  Historic District Commission.  Regular member Vacancy.  Elevation of Alternate member Mark Caruthers to regular member; this is a 5-year term due to expire 12/2014.  Alternate member vacancy; this is a 5-year term due to expire 12/2015.

Motion to elevated alternate member Mark Caruthers to regular member; this is a 5-year term due to expire 12/2014 and appoint Donald Brigham as an alternate member; this is a 5-year term due to expire 12/2015.
