Removal of Three Trees on Main Street
In the next week or so, Eversource will be removing three Sweet Gum trees along Main Street.

For many years, there have been repeated complaints, warnings, accidents and other issues surrounding these three trees on the Saybrook Hardware block. While these trees provide a Main Street canopy, they are in the power lines and have caused disruption to power at various times over the years. More recently, branches have dropped and caused vehicle damage (nearly striking an elderly passenger). Lastly and perhaps most importantly, and after extensive consultation with the tree warden, it has been determined that the droppings from these trees of hard round “seeds” cause and have caused a danger to the pedestrian population on this block. There have been slips and falls on these seeds and the merchants have repeatedly warned the town of these occurrences.

In the spring, the goal is to perform sidewalk repairs in this area, pull the stumps and re-plant trees that will be able to grow under or alongside the power lines. We are consulting with local arborists to determine what will look best for our Main Street.  This decision was not made lightly, and only with professional guidance designed to provide enhanced safety and a more beautiful Main Street.

Thank you.
