Old Saybrook Awarded $155,000 Brownfield Assessment Grant for Mariner’s Way Properties
~
(OLD SAYBROOK, CT) – Old Saybrook received a $155,000 assessment grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) on September 18. The grant supports Old Saybrook’s efforts to implement its redevelopment plan for Mariner’s Way.
Old Saybrook is one of 11 towns receiving a brownfield assessment grant. The $155,000 grant will support an investigation of potential pollutants on nine properties centrally located on Route 1 (Boston Post Road), also known as Mariner’s Way.~ The investigation will help determine if brownfields issues exist and, if so, provide an approved remediation plan that can be used by future developers. These properties encompass more than 18 acres that could support a mix of redevelopment uses to revitalize this area of Old Saybrook.
“We appreciate the support of Connecticut’s Office of Brownfield Remediation and Development led by Tim Sullivan. This grant represents a partnership with the state, the Town of Old Saybrook and a private entity owning property with significant redevelopment potential, and which also happens to be at the center of our local effort to revitalize a section of Route 1 that we now call Mariner’s Way,” said Carl P. Fortuna, Jr., Old Saybrook’s First Selectman. “We will use this grant to identify any existing contamination in the soils or in existing buildings and, if needed, create a remedial action plan (RAP). These grants help eliminate the uncertainty of the redevelopment process by helping municipalities, developers and site owners get properties one step closer to productive reuse. Investment in
planning for cleanup of pollution on these sites will pay long term dividends to the Town and the state by driving economic revitalization, eliminating blight, returning properties to the tax rolls and boosting long-term economic growth.”

DECD is providing funding to eligible cities, towns, and regional development agencies to assess and investigate brownfields in their communities. Prior to redevelopment of a brownfield or suspected contaminated site, environmental assessments are required to provide more information to potential developers about the site’s environmental conditions. These grants provide support for initial environmental testing and development of remediation plans with the purpose of getting the sites back into productive use.
