Lighthouse Mural Presented to Town
aaa childress&fortuna.jpg

A dramatic mural painted by the noted artist Robert Childress was formally presented by William Childress, his son, and family to the residents of Old Saybrook at ceremonies at the Acton Public Library on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.  Accepting on behalf of the town was First Selectman Carl Fortuna.

The mural depicts the Inner Lighthouse and was originally commissioned by the Middletown Savings Bank, now Liberty Bank, to commemorate the opening of the branch office in Old Saybrook.   It was returned to the Childress family after the Bank expanded in the 1980s.

Robert Childress was a resident of Old Saybrook in the 1950s and 1960s.  His work is represented in major national corporations and universities, although he is best remembered locally for illustrating the Dick and Jane reading series for which he used members of his family and neighbors.

The Lighthouse Mural measures 16’ x 6’ and was done with oil and water colors.
