Economic Development Commission

EDC Minutes Thursday, April 12, 2012

Present: David Cole, John DeCristoforo, Jim Keating, Liz Swenson, Todd Roberts and Wilma Asch.

Absent: Lauren Ashe, Bruce Greenfield and David Papandrea, Charles Polka,

Guests: Bob Shepard and Susan Esty

I.   Secretary Keating called the meeting to order at 7:08 PM in the EDC Office in Town Hall. Chairman Roberts arrived a moment later.

II.  On a motion (DeCristoforo/Cole) the Minutes of March 8, 2012 were accepted.

III.  EDC Web Presence

First we watched the video ”Old Saybrook, We’ve Got What You’re Looking For!”. Our guest, Bob Shepard of B & B Productions, was the producer and narrator of the April 1997 production. The consensus was that the voice over must be redone but many of the video shots can be reused. The video ran ten minutes, for the web it should be about four minutes. We could do two or three YouTube segments. Susan Esty has some current video clips to contribute. Costs would be about $15,000.

Next we discussed the target audience; business decision makers, developers and citizens. We discussed the idea of B&B Productions running a pre-production workshop and potential participants.

Finally a motion was made (DeCristoforo/Keating) to take the following actions and answer the questions:

·         Meet with Roland Laine to determine how we get information on the town website.
·         Determine exactly what we want on the website.
·         How much will it cost and how much do we have to spend
·         Who do we want to attract.
·         Continue our discussions at the May meeting.

The motion passed unanimously.

IV.  Old Business

A.  Entrance Signs - Commissioner DeCristoforo reported that the survey is done

B.  Rack Cards - Commissioner Swenson reported that she received little feedback. It was decided to go to Tina at Ceil to get a draft for the May meeting.

V.  New Business

A.  The motion regarding an updated video is reported above.

B.  Susan Esty reported that the landlords and property managers for numerous businesses are not local and not aware of local issues.

VI.  Comments from Chairman Roberts

He has spoken to a business interested in purchase of 40,000 square feet in town to employ 100 people.

VII.  Executive Director’s Report to be delivered by email

VIII. Chairman Roberts adjourned the meeting at about 8:45PM

Respectfully submitted,

James D. Keating – Secretary
