Conservation Commission Minutes 09/07/2011
MINUTES
SPECIAL MEETING
Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 8:00 A.M.
Town Hall, 2nd Floor Conference Room
302 Main Street

Members:
Attending:  R. Fish, B. Sherwin, J. Brophy

Partner-groups:
Old Saybrook Land Trust:  Sara Keaney, Janice Holland
Land Use Department:  Sandy Prisloe, Christine Nelson

The Chairman called the meeting to order at 8:00 A.M.

Discussion resumed about the Sustainable Saybrook partnership to inform the town about overlapping efforts by local groups that uphold the ethic of sustainability or long-term endurance of Old Saybrook as a community, an economy, and an environment.  It was agreed that a statement of this partnership’s origins be developed.  It was agreed that a mission statement be established and remain open to further development according to the eventual partners.

Attendees agreed that there is the beginning of a list of groups and others in the community will emerge to join the partnership of groups as word gets out.  There arose the question as to what level of involvement to seek from these groups.

There was discussion of how other communities have promoted the concept of sustainability, including the need for political buy-in.  The group agreed that it needs a framework or organizational structure, and will look at what work the Town of Essex has done to-date.

The attendees focused again on a website as the primary vehicle by which to raise townspeople’s level of awareness of sustainable initiatives; the group will register a domain name.  There was discussion about how to organize content and some of the methods used in existing sites about sustainability, including the PlaNYC site.  The partner-group again touched on website features, including a kick-off survey question.

The meeting adjourned at 9:00 A.M.

Respectfully submitted,

Christine Nelson
