Approval of Minutes from May 10 Meeting:  MOTION to approve the minutes from the May 10, 2011 meeting as presented, MOVED by: Bruce Sherwin; SECONDED by: Robert Siegelman; IN FAVOR: Unanimous; APPROVED: 4-0-0

Conservation Commission Program:

Pat Ingellis and Sandy Prisloe are continuing to mark the boundaries of our open space land.  In order to improve the efficiency of that process, Sandy has developed a GIS system for accurately putting the trails on our survey maps of Great Cedars to make boundaries easier to identify.

Alewife and eel runs in the fishway system are winding down for this year.  We again had a spectacular run of eels, with more than 20,000 counted at the Fishing Brook fishway.

Social Marketing / Methods and Subjects:

Although the commission feels it accomplished a great deal in the past decade in acquiring open space, stewardship and development of passive recreation in these areas, and the construction of a fishway system on the Oyster River, there is now a need to connect more with the community in order to introduce sustainability concepts.  Walter Smith presented the results of his research into Social Marketing, as a method of allowing the Conservation Commission to reach and influence the Old Saybrook community.  Saybrook Events and the town’s web site were mentioned as good vehicles for communicating with the public, as are partnerships with the Old Saybrook Land Trust and the Chamber of Commerce.  Subjects discussed were Green Landscaping (as the Land Trust is working), Buy Local campaigns, Clean Energy and energy conservation programs, recycling and better disposal of hazardous waste such as fluorescent light bulbs.  We will now try to translate this process into specific actions.

Adjournment:

The Commission adjourned at 9:10 p.m. until the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall, 2nd floor conference room, 302 Main Street.

Respectively submitted:
