Nottingham Conservation Commission Minutes, 4/11/11
The meeting was called to order by Chairman S. Demeritt at 7:06 pm. Other members present were Celia Abrams, Deb Kimball, and Noel Carlson (for Pete Landry).
Saving Special Places (SSP) conference:
S. Demeritt, C. Abrams and D. Stevens attended the SSP conference in Sutton recently. Abrams and Demeritt reported on the sessions they attended and information available. Abrams and Stevens attended a session on planning and creating trails. (There will be a Bear-Paw (BPRG) trails workshop on 4/30 at the Kimball easement on Freeman Hall.) Abrams also attended a workshop on using the GRANIT data layer for conservation easements and another, with Stevens, on Wetlands Conservation. The primary easement holder should submit the easement map and metadata information to GRANIT; we may need to work with BPRG to have them submit data for their easements in Nottingham. Wildlife sightings may now be reported online; perhaps we could provide information at the library on how to do this. Demeritt attended a session on amending conservation
easements, another on farmlands as wildlife habitat, and a third on bird habitat in forestland. Anything but very simple changes to easements, such as minor boundary adjustments, need to go through the Attorney General’s office.
VRAP program:
There is only 1 training session this year, on 5/14, 9am – noon, at the DES office in Concord. Noel is planning to attend. Most others have conflicts on that date. We may want to have our own refresher before the start of the testing season. C. Abrams will take the Nottingham kit to DES to have it checked and solutions replaced prior to the training date.
Minutes of the 3/14/11 meeting were accepted as corrected; moved by C.Abrams, seconded by S. Demeritt; 2 yes, 2 abstain. Minutes for the joint meeting with the Planning Board were deferred until the next meeting.
Correspondence:
We received acknowledgement for receipt of dues from NHACC.
We received an Intent to Cut from DES, map 29/lot 8-1, 181.15 acres on Rt 152, Jim Fernald, owner. This is part of the Mulligan Forest acreage. Permit is for 50 mbf white pine, 25 mbf hemlock, 10 tons pallet or tie logs, 20 tons hardwood and aspen pulp, 100 tons pine, 50 cords fuel wood.
There will be a DES workshop on Drinking Water Source Protection on Tuesday, 5/10, 8:30 – 4:00, at the Grappone Center in Concord, $40.
Received Cammett Engineering reports from 3/14/11, 3/17/11, and 4/4/11 on USA Springs property. Some repairs are still needed for slumped soil, erosion, and silt fence.
Lee will have an Energy Fair on 4/16 from 12 – 4pm.
BPRG:
There will be a trail workshop (see above) on 4/30 and a bird walk on 5/14 from 7-9am, led by Mark West. The biothon will be in June at the Cassier Town Forest in Raymond. See the newsletter and website for additional details. The Evans Mountain celebration will be in October.
Lamprey River Watershed Association (LRWA):
LRWA is looking for additional water testers for the VRAP program.
Roadside Cleanup:
Someone else appears to have done the portion of Rt 152 usually done by NCC. It would be best to try to get our Rt 156 section done prior to black flies and growth of vegetation. Schedules of individuals will make it difficult to coordinate a date, so D. Kimball will do from her house down to 152 (both sides) and perhaps D. Stevens can do the upper part. N. Carlson will check with Dan Debutts to see if the Boy Scouts did the cleanup on 152.
Other:
C. Abrams requested reimbursement for travel and registration fee for the SSP conference. Unanimously approved; moved by D. Kimball, seconded by N. Carlson.
The Speaking for Wildlife presentation on Bats of NH is tomorrow night at 6:30. We have heard there will be a number of scouts in the audience.
Meeting was adjourned by unanimous vote at 8:38 pm; moved by N. Carlson, seconded by D.S Kimball.
Respectfully submitted, Celia Abrams, acting secretary
