Norwell Board of Selectmen’s Meeting

Mr. Merritt welcomed everyone to the Board of Selectmen’s meeting and introduced himself, Paul Gaynor and James M. Boudreau, Town Administrator.  John Mariano was unable to be present.

Ralph Gordon of the School Building Committee was unable to make the meeting and was postponed until next week.  In his place, Greg McBride will present a grant the Conservation Commission worked on for funds to construct a bridge at the Jacob’s Pond area.

MOTION:    Mr. Gaynor moved the Board approve the agenda as amended.  Second by Mr. Merritt.

Greg McBride of the Conservation Commission was in regarding a grant to construct a bridge at the Jacob’s Pond area.  One of the main goals of their management plan has been to enhance public access.  This opportunity to apply for funds became available.  It is very early in the process, but very exciting because they can create a space for fishing and walking.

MOTION: Paul Gaynor moved the Board accept this grant for $10,000 from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on behalf of the town for access improvements to the Jacobs Pond area and further authorize the chairman of the Board to execute the grant agreement.  Second by Mr. Merritt.

MOTION:     Paul Gaynor moved the Board accept a gift of $200 towards the restoration of the Jacobs-Collamore Cemetery Fund for an Eagle Scout project.  Second by Mr. Merritt.

MOTION:     Paul Gaynor moved the Board approve the appointment of Joseph Strazdes as a special officer for the North River Patrol for the Summer of 2001.  Second by Mr. Merritt.

MOTION:     Paul Gaynor moved the Board grant a request from Family Crest Catering for a one-day license to sell wines & malts only at an event to be held at the Cushing Center on Saturday, May 26, 2001 between the hours of 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM, subject to receipt of a certificate of liability naming the town of Norwell additional insured with a liquor liability of $1,000,000.  Second by Mr. Merritt.

Voted.

The request from Seasons Café & Deli for a one-day license to sell all-alcoholic beverages at an event to be held at the Cushing Center on Saturday, June 9, 2001 between the hours of 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM was put off because the certificate of liability was not in order.
MOTION:     Paul Gaynor moved the Board approve a request from the residents of Hall Dr., Christopher Rd,. and Germaine Rd. to block off Christopher Rd. for their annual neighborhood block party  on Saturday, May 26, 2001 from noon until 9:00 PM.  A rain date of May 27th is requested.  Second by Mr. Merritt.

MOTION:     Paul Gaynor moved the Board approve a request from Cobra Enterprises for a Road Opening Permit for the purpose of installing a 6” sprinkler line at 29 Accord Park Drive, with a 4’ x 24’ trench, subject to the comments and conditions from Department Heads.  Dig Safe #2001-1608953.  Second by Mr. Merritt.

The Board read several items of interest:
·       Resurfacing & Related Work on a section of Route 3 from Duxbury to Hingham will commence in the upcoming weeks.
·       The Memorial Day Services will be held on Monday, May 28th.  The parade will be forming at the corner of Main and Lincoln at 9:30 am and stepping off at 10:00 am, proceeding down Main to the Common at Norwell Center where services will be held.  The Chair, Mr. Richard Merritt, will be asked to bring greetings to all.
·       Town Hall Summer Hours will be starting on Tuesday, May 29th.  Monday through Thursday 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM.  Friday 7:45 AM to NOON.
·       The Norwell Police Department will sponsor a R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) course at the Cushing Center of June 5, 6, 12 and 14, 2001 from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM.  The course is open to women age 16 and above who live or work in Norwell.

MOTION:     Paul Gaynor moved the Board adjourn.  Second by Mr. Merritt.
