WORKSHOP: Workshop Opened at 7:00pm
Regionalization and School of Choice were discussed with the Ad Hoc School Building Committee and the school superintendents from North Stonington (Dr. Natalie Pukas), Haddam-Killingworth (Mr. Gary Mala), and Preston (Dr. John Welch) and also the public.
Chairman Carlson turned the workshop over to Vice Chairman D’Angelo. Vice Chair provided a highlight to our existing charter to set stage for discussion. Vice Chair provided questions to the Superintendants of two schools present, and the public also asked questions. Some of the ‘highlights’ on regionalization included: increased type and number of courses, all schools must be interested in regionalizing, the state of CT has laws and rules for regionalization, perceived los of control by one town, towns change over time (student numbers, ideals, views), board of education is based in original agreement, must consider transportation costs and distances. For School of choice the highlights were: If a town has no high school it gets to select one nearby, students might be allowed to attend other high schools,
increased type and number of courses, the high schools must be interested in allowing your students to enroll there as an option, this is
based upon agreements (contracts), must consider transportation costs and distances, and representation on boards must be considered. Overall a town needs to consider if they are offering their students what they need.
Workshop closed at 9 P.M.
Respectively Submitted, Arthur Dobley, Recording Secretary Ad Hoc School Building Committee
