October 6, 2008 Call to Order at 6:30 PM (Walley) Present: Walley, Taylor, Rusich, Congdon, Aiello, Suedemire - Minutes from previous meeting to be reviewed at the next meeting. - No public comments - No correspondence - Discussed plaques for the soccer coaches possibly donated by Sandra Brokaw (photographer for program pictures). If she does not, commission will purchase these as a thank you to the volunteer coaches. - Hines was contacted by a fencing instructer from Niantic wanting to offer this program to NS residents. The program was not to be run through the NS recreation and was very expensive. The commission deemed the program inappropriate to pursue and advertise. Old Business - Walking track. Congdon, Suedemire, Aiello, and Hines met at the recreation area a week prior to survey the area and get ideas for a track at the recreation area. Hines will discuss this with selectman's office as this will be an expensive project. This will be discussed by the commission after Hines speaks to the selectmans office. - Hines presented an updated sign ip sheet for recreation programs designed to streamline the form and make it more user friendly. Hines will revise the current form to look like the proposed form. - Hines reported that some families were upset about a rule prohibiting children from attending the summer playground if they are unable to attend the full week. Summer school interferes with some childrens ability to attend all days each week. Motion by Taylor that children be allowed to miss days during the week and still attend, but payment will be for the full week. Aiello 2nd and all in favor. New Business - Egg Hunt will be on October 31st at 5 PM . - Last year the commission purchased 5 gallons of cider, 14 dozen donuts, and put out 2000 eggs. - This year the commission will purchase 8 gallons of cider, 14 dozen donuts, gift certificates to local establishments, and put out 2000 eggs. There are some left over decorations and supplies from last year that will be used this year. MVSL - Congdon reported that he is trying to reschedule some of the missed games, but it having difficulty with some of the other participating towns. He also reported that securing referees has been difficult and coaches have had to step in at times. He reported that the NS games have not been an issue. Congdon reports that each team in the Bantam division had large numbers due to the league not allowing NS to have 4 teams. He further reported that the NS teams have done well in the league. Congdon mentioned that he would like to see the commission purchase two potable benches for the recreation area for programs at the field. He brought a brochure for 8 benches that are $145 per bench. Motion made (Aiello) to purchase 2 benches. 2nd (Rusich) All in favor. Basketball Program - discussed changing the 3-5 group to break into smaller groups with less disparity. Discussed changing to 3-4 (co-ed) and 5-6 (separate). Concern that we may not have enough separate girls teams in that group. Suedemire suggested contacting Westerly as a town to schedule girls games as well as Stonington . Motion to adjourn at 7:55 PM ( Taylor ) 2nd (Aiello)
