Workshop convened at 7 PM.  Juliet Leeming welcomed the group.

Don Poland offered information on the role of sewers in communities and specifically what was being investigated for North Stonington.  He stressed the importance of the discussion being open, honest and non-confrontational with respect to everyone’s opinions.  He attempted to keep to the agenda.

Mark Waterhouse sited any large water-use developer would want sewers.  Zoning regulations can control what is allowed in our town even with sewers.  The State of CT is, over time, decreasing the time span for wastewater treatment plant permits and its technology is progressively improving.

Juliet Leeming indicated much of our commercial and industrial zones are over the aquifer.

One point of view was that the original Plan of Conservation & Development concluded sewers were not to be brought to North Stonington and, therefore, why were they again being discussed.

Consensus:  No strip malls, fear of change, sewers bring wider roads.

It was stated that businesses requiring sewers would not even investigate North Stonington as a venue.  Given the town’s needs for new revenue sources, we should make the investment.

People living on the sewer route, will have a sewer assessment on their property whether they want to access it or not.

Workshop adjourned at 9 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,

Marilyn Mackay, EDC Secretary
