NORTH STONINGTON CONSERVATION COMMISSION
North Stonington New Town Hall
May 23, 2013  6:00 PM

Meeting called to order at 6:03 PM
Present: Bill Ricker, Chair, Bob Fleury, Treasurer, Mike Charnetski, alt., and Pat Lewis, alt.
Absent: Dick Blodgett, Vice Chair, Warren Speh, and Joe Spano, Sec.
Minutes reviewed:Motion by Bob Fleury to accept the minutes and seconded by Pat Lewis. Approved.
Treasurers report: None

Citizen Comments: Local Boy Scout stated he is attending meeting to work towards his citizenship badge.
While reviewing unfinished business Bill Ricker explained to the scout in detail the trails and notable trees. He also reviewed our mission statement and responsibilities.

Unfinished Business:
Trail Signs were presented with corrections marked for Hangman Hill and the Asseconk Borderland Trail. It was noted as well as indicated on the proposed sign that the Asseconk Trail that passes over school property could not be used during school time, as recommended by the school superintendant.

Update on the Notable Tree Program.
Review of the Recreation Department Expo on May 18.  Minimal turnout at the school display.  Bill stated that as many as 47 turned out for the kayak/canoe instruction by Bill and Mary Ricker on Wyassup Lake that same morning.

Trail Hikes noted for June 1st were reviewed. Four appear to be in No.Stonington.

Community Calender: Bob Fleaury presented information on the cost of 600 calendars to be $2965.00, close to $5.00 a calendar. Having 1000 made would bring the cost down to over $3.00. Discussion of the pictures to be included on the calendar and perhaps looking for input from some of the in town photographers. Bill would inquire as to whom we might approach for initial funding.

The Drakos letter prepared and sent by Attorney Eppinger in early in May was read.

New Business: At the next meeting we will be discussing our conservation and recreation document. We will review our area maps and determine focus areas of interest to protect or preserve  for conservation or open space.
Bob Fleury brought to the commissions attention that 5.5 acres of land at the rotary is part of a parcel that will be going up on a foreclosure auction.  This parcel was to have been deeded as open space in 1989 but that did not come to fruition.
It was recommended that a letter be submitted to the board of selectman from the CC that we want it preserved as open space as intended. Bill Ricker prepared a letter that will be submitted to the selectmen.

Correspondence: Avalonia Magazine, Letter to Drakos.

Member Forum: No comments.

Adjournment: Motion made and seconded to adjourn at 7:45 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Pat Lewis
