The Youth Services salary and benefits will appear under the Town Administrator’s budget but discussion will take place during the time slotted to Youth Services. The Town Administrator’s budget will be discussed March 15, 2010.
Town Meeting is April 5, 2010 and June 7, 2010.

Changes to the Open Meeting law will take place on July 1, 2010 whereby sub-committee meetings will be subject to open meeting law rules. Meetings should be posted 48 hours in advance with agendas.

The first of several sub-committee meetings of PAUSE (Public Awareness and Understanding of Social Education) will take place next Tuesday, March 9, 2010. The sub-committees are School Day & Curriculum, Behavioral Management  & Discipline, and Community Outreach.  Jenny is on the sub-committee Community Outreach. The first topic PAUSE will be addressing is anti-bullying.  Currently the task force is a school group of 22 members but may reach out to other community members as the program develops. Jenny is working with the Youth Librarian to pick a book whose subject matter involves bullying and have a group of teens read the book and discuss the issues. Comments reflecting the youth’s point of view can then be brought back to these sub-committee meetings. The sub-committees will meet several more times during the month of March.

Jenny is reading to Hood School students tomorrow as part of the North Reading Reads Program.

Battle of the Bands is Saturday March 6th. Volunteers should arrive at 5:30. A $250 donation was received from Reading Co-Op as well as a $50 donation from a woman who saw the ad in the Boston Globe. The donations will cover expenses and prizes.

The teen workshop “Music Recording” had a large turnout. Chris Rival did a great job working with the youth.

Rock Band Tournament, which is part of North Reading Reads, is scheduled for March 27th. Since “The Soloist”, the North Reading Reads book is not a youth book, a discussion on music will be held so as to be part of the North Reading Reads program.

  • Outreach Campaign:
A summary of ideas discussed was sent out to members. A list of the various organizations and committees in town should be compiled. Jenny will forward the list that she has.

School Committee meets the 2nd and 4th Monday and would like Youth Services to present to them.

Jenny has met with Superintendent Manville and has discussed programs and ideas.

High School and Middle School principals have been very supportive. Jenny will continue to meet with them. Results of the Middle School survey are on the website. Jean will contact all principals for additional insight.

Kathy Dardeno will contact Abby Hurlbut about Youth Services presenting to the Finance Committee.

We received approval from St.Theresa’s church to put a notice in the church bulletin. Jean will contact the other churches in town to let them know of our services and programs.

Jenny will invite the three elementary schools to join in on Youth Service Day, a community service program of sprucing up the town center grounds.
