Discussion of Deer Tick Borne Disease Subcommittee Report

Dr. Grossman opened discussion on a draft report from the Deer Tick Borne Disease Subcommittee.  The committee members reviewed the first half of the report.  Some topics discussed were having physicians’ input, the suggestion of a more detailed deer census in order to have a more accurate baseline count, the threshold to where there is an effect of deer reduction, and forest fragmentation.  It was requested that language reflect the role of mice, as well as deer, with the association of ticks and the importance of personal protection when fighting against tick borne disease.  Discussions on this report will continue at the next meeting.

The Education Subcommittee Report will be distributed for the next meeting.

Final Comments

Dr. McLeod discussed a letter regarding concerns over a committee member stating a definitive opinion of a committee member during a Horticultural Club gathering.  Ms. Gaudet-Wilson stated she was there as well and agreed that it was inappropriate to discuss opinions outside of the commission meeting until issues have been voted on.  The commissioners were asked not to discuss the subject in a public forum until the final report is completed.

Public Comments – No public comments.

The committee adjourned at 10:05 pm.
