The Ad Hoc Tick Borne Disease Action Committee held a meeting on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at the C.H.  Booth Library, Main Street, Newtown, CT

PRESENT:  Mark Alexander, Kirk Blanchard, David Delia, Robert Grossman, Kim Harrison, Mary Gaudet-Wilson, Maggie Shaw, Peter Licht, Michelle McLeod, Neil Chaudhary, George Miller.

ALSO PRESENT:  Bill Furrier, Selectman, David Shugarts, Pat Boily, Kendra Bobowick from the Newtown Bee and four members of the general public.

CALL TO ORDER:  Dr. Grossman called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:  

Dr. Alexander moved to accept the minutes of January 27, 2010.  Seconded by Mr. Miller.  Motion carried unanimously.

Dr. Grossman opened discussed by stating that it was time to begin work on the final report to the Board of Selectmen.  He suggested that subcommittees be formed and meet separately in order to compile information and recommendations for the Selectmen.  The committee discussed possible future speakers and how information should be gathered and reported.  The committee discussed ways the subcommittees will work and the type of results they expect.  Dr. Grossman stated that the subcommittees should review what has already been addressed.  It was reiterated that all information will be brought forth to the Board of Selectmen who will make the final decision.  Dr. Grossman stated that even if people do not agree, opinions should be based on facts.  

Everyone was asked to create list of topics (disputed/undisputed) and e-mailed to the committee which will be discussed at the next meeting.

Drs. Grossman and McLeod will meet with the First Selectman in regards to the charge (or additional charges) of the committee.  

Bill Furrier, Selectmen, was present and offered his assistance.  He said that, as a scientist, science is a peer review and suggested the committee members look at statistics.  

It was noted that speaker, Matt Pound, may not be in the area soon but offered to be available via conference call.

PUBLIC COMMENT

Frank Gardner acknowledged that the killing of deer is an emotional topic but felt that recreational hunting works.  He also discussed the safety of bow hunting.  Jean Rosen from Sandy Hook compared near misses of car accidents near the flagpole with unreported Lyme Disease information.  She discussed concerns over the science of measuring Lyme Disease.
