The Ad Hoc Tick Borne Disease Action Committee held its first meeting on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at the C.H. Booth Library, Main Street, Newtown, CT. First Selectman Joseph Borst called the meeting to order at 8:01 p.m.

PRESENT: Members of the Committee, Kirk Blanchard, Pat Boily, Neil K. Chaudhary, David Delia, Dr. Robert Grossman. Kim Harrison, Dr. Peter Licht, Michele McLeod, Mary Gaudet-Wilson, Maggie Shaw and David Shugarts.

ALSO PRESENT: First Selectman Joseph Borst, Selectman Herbert C. Rosenthal, Selectman Paul Magniafico, Town Clerk Debbie Aurelia, and Shirley A. Paproski. Support Staff members present were Judy Blanchard and Amy Mangold, and several members of the public.

Town Clerk Debbie Aurelia swore in the members of the Committee Kirk Blanchard, Pat Boily, Neil K. Chaudhary, David Delia, Dr. Robert Grossman. Kim Harrison, Dr. Peter Licht, Michele McLeod, Mary Gaudet-Wilson, Maggie Shaw and David Shugarts. First Selectman Joseph Borst described the qualifications of the support staff and said how each can help the committee. He mentioned Donna Culbert of the Health Department and Rob Sibley of the Conservation Department. It was discussed that the Police Department would have useful information on the deer kill count. Joe Tani, Highway department supervisor would also have information on the deer kill count because the highway department is called in to remove deer from the sides of the road. Judy Blanchard, the District Health Coordinator for the school system and Amy Mangold of Park and Recreation would also be good sources of information. Scott Sharlow would be able to provide GIS maps to the Committee. Dr. Tom Draper would be available for support as well as Bob Eckenrode, Chariman of the Newtown Forest Association.

PUBLIC COMMENT: There were no public comments.

First Selectman Borst gave suggestions as to how the Committee should proceed. He said that within the next 3 months they should have some idea as to where they are going on the subject of  tick borne diseases. It was discussed that maybe the USDA could come in and do a full investigation on the problem. Other agencies in the State of Connecticut were also suggested.

Election Of Chairperson: Dr. Robert Grossman was appointed Temporary Chairman.

Meeting Schedule: Next meeting is scheduled for September 16, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. at a location to be announced.

ADJOURNMENT: Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
