Employee Safety Committee
March 7, 2012
Newtown Public Works Garage
In attendance: Carole Ross, Chairman, Bill Halstead, Rob Sibley, Rob Toth, Cathy Monckton, Joe Tani, Carol Kochiss, Tim Whelan and George Tammaro from CIRMA. Mr. Toth has replaced Mrs. Miles as a member.
Mrs. Ross opened the meeting at 10:00am.
Review of injury reports: The review of the reports did not take place. All members will be sent the quarter OSHA reports. For the quarter 7 injuries were reported. All employees but one has returned to work.
Training: Mr. Samuelson reported via email to Mrs. Ross that the Parks & Recreation Department has signed up for or have attended the CIRMA chain saw safety class on Feb 23rd, the Pesticide Ban legislation workshop on March 2nd, the Ct Parks Association workshop on March 14th and the Irrigation Troubleshooting class on March 16th. Mr. Tammaro will be in contact with Mrs. Ross about a class for confined space. Additionally Mr. Toth reported that CL&P was having a class at Highway for wire procedures.
Old business: Traffic issue at the Municipal Center. Mrs. Monckton again reported on the need for a crosswalk or stop signs at the Land Use end of the building. A police car has been there on many occasions but it is not working. Speeders continue to not be mindful of pedestrians. Mrs. Ross will talk with the First Selectman, the Public Works Director and the Chief of Police to see if this can be rectified.
Building inspections/concerns:
The Public Works inspection will take place following the meeting. See inspection report.
The next meeting will be held on June 6th at the Municipal Center
