Healing Newtown Project

  • The HealingNewtown Project is an undertaking of the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission to facilitate, support, and coordinate arts-focused efforts made on our behalf for today, tomorrow, and into the future.  The Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut and the Connecticut Office of the Arts support this effort.  We are focusing on uplifting efforts.
  • Goals: Our goal is to develop the capacity to manage the overwhelming response from the arts community with regards to the Sand Hook tragedy and to develop a sustainable operation for long-term healing through arts-based efforts.
  • Focus: The primary focus is to coordinate, collaborate, and communicate opportunities for arts healing for the Newtown community.
  • Objectives: Objectives include addressing needs and inquiries for arts programs, performances, and other art-related activities, as well as monetary donations that have been received by the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.  It is not to solicit gifts or produce events.  Where possible, coordinating/collaborating with other local resources is encouraged and should be facilitated.
  • HealingNewtown.org has been created to share information about arts healing in Newtown and to accept, record and categorize submissions.  This includes 2D and 3D art, workshops, performances, exhibits, monetary donations, etc.
  • Protocol: Artists, volunteers, and donors who wish to contribute must log onto healingnewtown.org and fill out the “how you can help” or (monetary) donation form for processing. “How you can help” contributors will be contacted by the volunteer coordinator(s) assigned to their category (e.g. 2D Art).  The coordinator will help facilitate (communication, obtaining, displaying, scheduling) by organizing with HealingNewtown Arts Space or by collaborating with other artists, local resources/venues as needed.
  • High profile and/or large venue events will be forwarded to Patrick Kinney’s team for follow-up/facilitation. Volunteer Coordinators working with performers will be asked to provide guidance.
  • New space for HealingNewtown donated to NCAC with help from Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut and COA is opening up at 5 Queen Street (Old Ace Hardware location, next to Caralluci’s).  For now the lease is on a month to month basis.
  • Facebook face for HealingNewtown http://www.facebook.com/healingtown
  • Approximately 170 submissions have been received through the website.  Additional submissions have been coming in through other groups in town.
  • Submissions are in the process of being categorized
  • Donna Mangiafico has volunteered to be the Volunteer Coordinator
  • HealingNewtown Arts Space has been established to accept, store, exhibit, and house art therapy, performances, workshops/education, and meetings.  The space will be open to the public during posted hours of operation and scheduled activities.
  • Ikea – has donated furniture for the HealingNewtown Arts Space.  NCAC members and their families will help build and set up the furniture.
  • Grand Opening: tentatively scheduled for Thursday February 14th, 4 to 7pm.
A Coordinator/Volunteer Meeting will be held – Saturday January 19, 2013, 2-4pm HealingNewtown Arts Space, 5 Queen St, Newtown CT.

The next meeting of the NCAC will be Tuesday January 22, 2013 at 7:30pm in Meeting Room 1, Newtown at the Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street, Newtown, CT.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:55pm
