NCAC Chairperson, Jennifer Johnston, introduced John Cusano who spoke about the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism.  Jennifer also thanked everyone for coming to participate in the meet and greet and a special thanks to Andrea’s Bakery and Mocha Coffeehouse for donating the refreshments.

John Cusano, Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, discussed arts funding, the regional and local arts agencies he works with, the peer advisory network, HOT (higher order thinking) Schools, and the benefit of participating with other groups such as the Housatonic Valley Cultural Alliance and New England Foundation for the Arts.

The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission (NCAC) is working on a database of local cultural arts organizations and artists and a calendar of events to be posted on the newtownartscommission.org website.  The NCAC would also like to create and distribute a monthly or quarterly newsletter.  The use of the Edmond Town Hall as a Cultural Arts Center with live performances, arts classes and workshops, rehearsal space, meeting space, etc., was discussed.

Jennifer Rogers provided the following action items discussed at the meeting:
  • Compile a local artist database or inventory~
  • Compile a local needs assessment~
  • agencies, facilities available with stats, etc.
  • Participate in HVCA and CAFC~
  • marketing roundtable discussion
  • Develop an email grand list for marketing purposes
  • Develop a electronic newsletter (weekly, monthly) fed by local arts and businesses
  • Create an interactive arts calendar for our website~
  • we must streamline submissions and make it attractive to use
  • Revisit the last survey (which I have never seen)~
  • perhaps gear up for a new one - redo every 3 to 5 years
  • Consider applying for another Peer Advisor grant focusing on fundraising
  • Consider how we might integrate the arts across other sectors to create instrumental value to our community
  • Education: ~Higher Order Thinking (H.O.T.) Schools - any interest in Newtown?
  • Healthcare: ~bringing the arts to those who can't get out (Ashlar, Masonicare, etc.)
  • Collect materials from local arts groups to have on display table at NCAC events
  • Attend~Americans for the Arts~conference, this year in Baltimore~
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2010, 7:00 PM at the Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street, Newtown, CT.

Respectfully submitted,
Donna Mangiafico
Secretary
