Meeting Minutes

The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission (NCAC) held a meeting on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Mary Hawley Room at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, Newtown, CT.

Members Present:  Debbie Aurelia, Martin Blanco, Joe Grasso, Jennifer Johnston, Rob Kaiser, Donna Mangiafico, Jennifer Rogers

Members Absent:  Emily Howard, Linda Watson

Auxiliary Members Present:  None

Guests Present:  None

Jennifer Johnston called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.

The minutes of the May 28, 2009 were approved as written.  The minutes of the June 25, 2009 meeting were approved with one correction (Page 2 – Annual Report is due August 31 not October 1).  The minutes of the July 23, 2009 meeting were approved as written.  The review and approval the By-Laws were tabled until the September 24, 2009 meeting.  

Officer Reports:

The Labor Day Parade was discussed.  The NCAC will meet at Division 2, Number 18, Color Blue on Currituck Road.  There will be a gathering at Jennifer Rogers home on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at 12:30 PM to make preparations for the parade float.  A motion was made and unanimously approved to allow up to $250.00 for supplies and parade banners.

Martin Blanco announced that there will be a meeting of the Housatonic Valley Cultural Alliance on September 11, 2009 from 9:00 – 10:30 AM at the AT&T building on 39 West Street in Danbury.  All NCAC members are invited to attend.

The Flagpole Radio Café was discussed.  Martin Blanco announced that the guest artist at the September 12, 2009 show would be Vanesse Thomas.  Martin Blanco reported that the ticket price will need to increase to $15.00 from $10.00 to attempt to cover the cost of moving the performance to the theater.  Martin also suggested using the Paypal/Credit Card system that was put in place for the 2009 Film Festival for ticket sales.  Jennifer Rogers recommended offering levels of support which, for example, might include six advertisements for the price of five to encourage businesses and local residents to advertise and or show their support.  Jennifer will draft a level of support page and forward it to NCAC members for review.  

Martin Blanco reported that the Edmond Town Hall Board of Managers has appointed Mary Fellows to be the NCAC contact for any and all events that may scheduled at the Town Hall.

Martin Blanco discussed the need for more detailed financial statements for grant submission.  Debbie Aurelia offered to meet with the Town’s Finance Department to request this.

Jennifer Rogers announced that she has been in contact with Diane Wardenburg regarding either a murder mystery or da Vinci’s  “The Last Supper” performance.  Appropriate space to hold this type of performance was discussed.  Jennifer will make some inquiries and report back at the September meeting.

Joe Grasso discussed the proposed Sunday, December 20, 2009 performance by WCSU of “A Christmas Carol.”  He will contact WCSU to confirm the date and discuss set up time and report back to the NCAC.

Donna Mangiafico will contact Frank and Patrice Galterio, co-founders of the “Kent Film Festival,” to invite them the September meeting or set up a special meeting to share their experience.  Jennifer Johnston reported that Charter Communications is interested in partnering with the NCAC to offer a Film Festival to Newtown.
