March 10, 2011 Trails Committee Minutes
NEWTON TRAILS COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
MARCH 10, 2011

  • Call to Order: Chairperson Sandy Estabrook called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm. In attendance were: Chair person Sandra Estabrook; Vice Chair Brian Valimont; and Committee members Mary Anne Lapierre and Mike Vaillant. Minutes were transcribed by Secretary Rick Milner.
  • Appointments - Estabrook presented appointment applications for members to fill out and return to the selectmen's office. The committee came to a consensus that term limits for the appointments were not required.
  • Spring clean-up discussion - The committee decided that its priority for the spring season should be the clean-up of Old Lower Road starting at the Whittier Street entrance.
Estabrook and Vaillant discussed the proper materials to use to kill poison ivy and not harm the surrounding environment.
Valimont explained that there are inexpensive tyvek suits that can be worn to protect workers against poison ivy infection.
To avoid crossing onto surrounding private property, the committee also determined that the exact location of the boundaries for Old Lower Road needed to be marked. In an attempt to determine the boundaries, the committee examined plans for the surrounding properties. The committee came to a consensus to conduct further investigation to determine the exact boundaries. If the committee could not identify the boundaries, they could request funds from the Board of Selectmen or Conservation Commission to hire a surveyor to map the area.

  • Other business – Estabrook suggested that another activity for the committee would be to volunteer time to help the Safe Routes to Schools committee with trail maintenance.
The committee came to a consensus to hold two meetings per month for April, May, and June in order to take advantage of better weather to explore trails.

  • Adjourn – Meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm. Next meeting will be held on April 14, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Town Hall.

Respectfully Submitted,

Rick Milner
Secretary
