Trails Committee Minutes for August 12, 2010
Attendance:
Shelia, Mary Anne, Trisha, Brain, Kim and Sandy.
Guest: Mike Vaillant
Meeting called to order at 7:08pm.
Sandy recorded the minutes.
Walked Peanut Trail:
Members met to walk the Peanut Trail property on North Main St. from the Fire Station toward Merrimac, MA. We wanted to familiarize ourselves with the piece of property. Brian brought a hand held GPS and Trisha had a measure wheel to help us figure out distances. The group found the beginning of the trail a little confusing. There is a sign not allowing motorize vehicles with a wooden post that is falling over and needs to be fixed. The trial is an old railroad bed therefore it has a good strong base. Trisha said that the town owns 40 feet on each side of the center line of the tracks. There are a couple of holes that need to be filled in. Brain and Sandy noted some fallen down trees, dead pines and overhanging ones that should be cleaned up. This might be a project the group can take on. We continued
until we got to the STOP sign marking the end of the trail. There is another piece of town land that comes from Town Hall Road down to old rail bed. We believe we found it. The summer is coming to an end and darkness is approaching quickly so we headed back. Sandy asked the group if they wanted to continue the meeting at the town hall to get away from the mosquitoes. They said no. Sandy suggested that at our next meeting we could walk Town Hall Rd toward the Peanut Trail. Mary Anne made a motion to get an earlier start and begin at 6:30. All were in favor. Meet at town hall.
Kim asked if we were accepting new members, all were open to the possibility. Mike the guest on this walk was showing interest in joining.
We still need to fill open positions.
Next meeting Thursday August 26 at 6:30 PM.
