April 7, 2012 Board of Selectmen Minutes
SELECTMEN’S MEETING MINUTES
        April 7, 2012

Called meeting to order at 9:15am
Present were: Selectmen Thayer, Melvin and McCarthy
Present Mike Pivero, Road Agent
This meeting was to discuss the Memorial Day Parade for 2012

Melvin said he spoke to the Historical Society and will be transporting the Hayford Carriage on his flat bed. Melvin said that Bob Donovan Sr had not been contacted yet about getting older or unique vehicles for the parade. McCarthy said that Sue has his home number and will be contacting him.
Road Agent Mike Pivero, said he will work on multiple military vehicles and motor cycles once we agree on the route of the parade. He said it doesn’t make sense to ask for vehicles is the route stays the same as last year because it’s just too short. It was discussed that the Troop Carrier can transport about 20 Vet’s and also has a person with a CDL license to drive it. Road Agent further stated he needs more Flags for the roads. He may move some around, since budget is tight on the Flag line. Also discussed having a waiver drawn up for Vet’s to sign (or anyone else that may be on transported on town vehicles). It was also discussed to ask Mary to call our insurance agent about getting coverage and registration for that event. Mike said that sometimes you can get insurance for vehicles that take effect only when they are being used. Also decided to have Sue check with Police Department and State about shutting down Rte 108 for about an hour on memorial day at the intersection of Merrimac Rd and Thornell Rd. Melvin said he would mention it to Chief Streeter. It was discussed to use Police Department Property for staging and also discussed using the Central Fire Station. Various routes were discussed including Thornell to West Main to Whitter St and also South Main Street from the Fire Station up to Highland to Whitter. General feeling was that Highland was a better route, but it will depend on whether we can shut down South Main from Thornell to Highland for the length of time the parade passes though. Also Carl Goodwin from the Vet’s Club is very excited about Newton participating in the Kingston part of the parade. He also said he would send us the date and time for their next meeting. Below is a copy of his email:

Hi Trisha, I got your email as well as your voice mail. We would LOVE to have your participants join in our Memorial Day Parade! We are planning to use the same schedule as last year, marshal in Newton at 10:30am with a 11:00am step off, then marshall in Kingston at 12:30pm with a 1:00pm step off. I will be sure to contact you when we meet with our town officials to assure that we are all on the same page. The change in the route would be fine as long as it doesn't add any marching distance. Thanks for your consideration on the parade route. I really like the idea of the military vehicles for the older Vets to ride in, I'll bring it up at our next membership meeting, as well as sharing the Grand Marshal idea. We haven't selected one yet. Do you have a candidate in mind? I will also include Sue as cc:. Cordially, Carl Goodwin President, KVC
Sue has contacted the school for the bank and the cheerleaders. Haven’t heard back from anyone yet except Jonathon VanderEls, Principal of the Memorial Day School, (he can’t make it). Sue has sent emails to Police, Fire, Road Agent, Selectmen and Schools requesting participation.
The next recreation meeting will be next week and we will share the minutes of this meeting.
Adjourn: at 10:15am
