June 6, 2016 Recreation Commission Minutes
NEWTON RECREATION COMMISSION
DATE: Monday June 6,  2016
TIME: 7 PM
LOCATION: Town Hall Rear Meeting Room

MEETING MINUTES

  • Call to Order  :  Chairman Bob Faghan called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.
  • Members in Attendance:  Bob Faghan, Selectman Ex-Officio Matt Burrill, Vice-Chairman Annie Collyer, Steve St. Cyr and Alternate Vanessa Burrill.
  • Guests:  None
  • Approval of Minutes of May 23, 2016: Selectman Burrill made a motion, seconded by Mr. St. Cyr, to approve the minutes of May 23, 2016 as written.  There being no discussion, the motion passed unanimously.
  • Memorial Day Parade:  Due to rain storms, the parade was canceled this year.  Grand Marshall Jim Holland has agreed to serve next year.
  • Movie Nights:  The movie night was attended by 5 families.  Mr. Faghan reported that it went well.  Road Agent Mike Pivero helped by obtaining extra electric cord.  Acting Chief Mike Jewett stayed for the entire time.  At the June 17 Movie, Mr. Faghan recommends having a portapotty.  Ms. Collyer recommends grass-cutting the day before the movie since the grass was about 5 inches long, and that there be mosquito treatment.  Selectman Burrill said with mosquito season peaking in mid-July, this is probably the last movie night this year.  Until after the hard frost in the fall, mosquitoes will be a problem and then it gets too cold.  Chief Jewett said the location of the movie on the front lawn was not a problem for neighbors.  Selectman Burrill suggested Mr. Faghan check on the safety of cord length recommended by the town.  If sufficient length is OK, Ms. Collyer suggested reversing the direction of the screen, so that the viewers are looking downhill and the kids playing before the movie do not get as close to the road.  Mr. Faghan will work to get an ice cream vendor before the start of the movie and for the first 15 minutes of it.
Ms. Collyer said that there is a poll of movies up on Facebook.  Mrs. Burrill suggested putting a last call for voting for Wednesday, so we can choose the winning movie, reserve and publicize it.
Selectman Burrill made a motion, seconded by Ms. Collyer, that we spend up to $100 for a portapotty for June 17.  The motion passed unanimously. Mr. Faghan will follow up.
Ms. Collyer will publicize the poll, then prepare an event on Facebook and an online flyer for email and cable and for Facebook, send it out to the schools for their final newsletters of this school year, and put an article in the Carriage Towne News, adding that there will be a portapotty, mosquito spraying and fresh lawn cutting, as well as an ice cream vendor for this movie night.
  • Town Beach:  Mr. Faghan reported on a picnic bench that was thrown into the water.  He rescued it.  He noted that the security cameras are not pointed toward the water.  Ms. Collyer mentioned that to Chief Jewett, who said he will arrange for the one on the shed to be pointed to the water.  Mr. Faghan will follow up with the Chief.
  • Mr. St. Cyr will be installing the buoys in the coming week.  He will follow up with Mr. Pivero on getting the raft brought to the beach once the security cameras are adjusted.
  • Greenie Park:  Selectman Burrill commented on how well-kept the grounds look, and credited the NBSA cleanup in particular.
  • Senior Events:  Tabled
  • Town 5K Race Sept 10:  Mrs. Burrill has developed a list of ideas for brainstorming:
  • Water- Jamie and Laurie Bezanson have volunteered to handle water stations again this year
  • Parking- she wants to be sure this is demarked
  • Routes.  A route map and markers posted
  • Police detail- Estimated cost $100
  • EMT Detail- Probable no cost as Larry Foote will serve, Selectman Burrill proposed
  • Timer
  • Prizes and medals - Male and Female for each of the following: Fastest overall, Fastest 12 & under, Fastest 40 plus, Fastest 60 plus
  • Score timers (2)
  • T shirts - question of tech or cotton.  Design is important, and we may have a design contest
  • Cost to participate
  • Closing ceremony:  DJ.  The idea to advertise on Facebook for a DJ was raised.
  • Listing race- Cool Runnings?
  • Mr. Burrill made a motion, seconded by Ms. Collyer, that the cost for race signup be $20 online and $25 at the race.  Discussion followed that the timing for the end of online signups will be determined by the time needed to order tee-shirts.  The motion passed unanimously.
  • Ms. Collyer will email a list of vendors from last year's 5K, including the Kingston Lions Club.
  • Mrs. Burrill suggested a Fun Run at 9:30, walkers start at 10 AM and runners at 10:30 AM.
  • Other Business:  Ms. Collyer thinks we should get rid of materials that are in the Rear meeting room and are old and not usable.  It was agreed to donate crafts materials to the Newton Learning Center.  Ms. Collyer will contact Mary Winglass, Office Manager, about an old reel projector.  She will also ask Nancy Wrigley, Town Administrator, to get Tony to throw out the old signage.  She pointed out that we have Memorial Day parade materials that will stay on top of the bookcases.
  • Adjournment:  Selectman Burrill made a motion, seconded by Ms. Collyer, that the meeting be adjourned.  Passing unanimously, Mr. Faghan adjourned the meeting at 8:10 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Annie Collyer, Secretary
