NEWTON RECREATION COMMISSION
DATE: MONDAY July 27, 2015
TIME: 7 PM
LOCATION: NEWTON TOWN HALL, 2 TOWN HALL ROAD
MEETING MINUTES
- Call to Order: Chairperson Annie Collyer called the meeting to order at 7 PM>
- In Attendance were Selectman Ex-Officio Matt Burrill, Sue Milner, Bob Faghan and Steve St. Cyr.
- Approval of Minutes: Faghan made a motion, seconded by St. Cyr, to approve the minutes of July 20, 2015 as written. The motion passed unanimously.
- Town Day: This meeting was a special meeting called to make some key decisions about this year's Town Day. It was learned that two organizations, the Fire Department and the Lions Club, were not available to participate in Town Day on September 26. The other possible conflicts were two Recreation members, Milner and St. Cyr, who are not available on the weekend of October 3, and Burrill who is not available on September 26. Faghan pointed out that an extra week will be helpful in securing vendor participation. Collyer made a motion, seconded by Milner, that we hold Town Day on October 3, with a rain date of October 4. The motion passed unanimously.
- Events planned for Town Day are bands, with staging and a sound engineer; Zoo Creatures; Town Committees with information and kids' activities; State Police Dog Demo; Max the Monarchs mascot; Smokey the Bear; Touch a Truck from the Fire Department; demonstrations from Empower; and activities from Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Sports organizations. The Commission would like to call upon the Fire Department to provide a spaghetti dinner for an at-cost price between 5 and 7:30, followed by a fireworks display, while bands continue to perform. Collyer will contact residents who worked on the Memorial PTO 5K in the past to ask for help in putting on a 5K this year. The Commission is in favor of having any money raised by the vendors and 5K that is not used for the costs of Town Day be donated by
the Town to the schools and other charitable organizations in town. Burrill pointed out publicity is key, and that he gave Office Manager Mary Winglass daily emails to broadcast in the weeks leading up to the event last year. Facebook postings, and Carriage Towne News articles all help spread the word as well. Collyer will put together a proposal for signage for the meeting next week, and she and Milner will arrange with Police Chief Streeter to walk the grounds at 8 Merrimac Rd on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.
- Adjournment: Milner made a motion to adjourn at 7:45 PM. Burrill seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Respectfully submitted,
Annie Collyer, Secretary
