September 22, 2010 Recreation Commission Minutes
NEWTON RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF MEETING
SEPTEMBER 22, 2010

  • Call to Order: Chairman Deb Holden called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm with the following members in attendance: Deb Holden, Pauline Dupuis, Matt Muskrat, and Ray Thayer, BOS ex officio.  Minutes were transcribed by secretary Lisa Babcock.
  • Senior Trip to Salem Willows - Recap: Dupuis reported that the senior trip to Salem Willows was a success.
She said that seniors expressed interest in a fall foliage tour and a theater trip. She also suggested a trip to see the Rockettes’ Christmas show.

The secretary will find out how much is left in the senior programs budget.

  • Fall Fair: Dawn Sylvester was asked to provide “pay-per-ride” pony rides for the fair.  Thayer said he spoke to Ms. Sylvester and she would be willing to donate any proceeds above $50 back to Recreation. The Commission determined that it would be best just to pay Ms. Sylvester the $50 and have the rides for free.
The Police and Fire departments have both committed to participating and a number of crafters have signed up.

Holden drafted a donation letter and wrote up envelopes. Dupuis will stuff the envelopes and put the letters in the mail.

NBSA will serve food from the concession stand. Recreation will provide coffee and the coffee maker.

Muskratt will contact Charmingfare Farm for a petting zoo and hayrides. Holden booked a magician. There will also be a fun run, chili contest, pie contest and scarecrow contest.

Dupuis ordered a plaque for the oldest resident of Newton.  It will be presented to Emma Ingalls during the fair.

  • Other Business: Chairman Holden announced her resignation from the commission.
The secretary submitted a bill for the flash drive.  The drive will be used to store recreation files.

  • Adjourn: The meeting was adjourned at 9:47 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,

Lisa Babcock, Secretary
Newton Recreation Commission
