August 26, 2009

1. Call to Order:
Chairman Rick Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:20 pm with voting members Bailey, Donovan and Slombo.  Bailey appointed Babcock to stand in for the evening. Minutes were transcribed and typed by Lisa Babcock.

2. Town Beach/Greenie Park:

Volleyball Net: Babcock had purchased some extra rope and other hardware for the volleyball net. Some "S" hooks are still needed.

Bike Rack: The shipping costs for the bike rack made the total cost of the bike rack exceed the originally voted on amount of $400.

Bailey moved to spend up to $500 (including shipping) out of the Recreation checking account for a bike rack for the town beach. Second by Babcock. Motion carried unanimously.

Bailey moved to spend up to $200 out of Greenie Park supplies for basketball rims for Greenie Park. Second by Babcock. Motion carried unanimously.

Bailey will purchase the rims at a sporting goods store and submit receipts for reimbursement.

Bailey moved to have the road crew install the bike rack, bench and volleyball net at the town beach, to remove the old bench at the beach and to install the basketball rims at Greenie Park.  Hours are to be paid out of town beach grounds maintenance.

Bailey left a message for the road agent, Mike Pivero asking him to contact the commission to arrange for the work to take place.

Bailey moved to reimburse two lifeguards $325 each for a total of $650 out of town beach salaries for lifeguard training classes. Second by Babcock. Motion carried unanimously.

3. Plan NH:
Babcock briefed the commission on the upcoming Plan NH events.  Bailey said he wanted to discuss the plans for Greenie Park as part of the event. Recreation will have a table at the Carriage Barn on Saturday the 26th.

4. Fall Foliage Trip for Seniors:

Bailey moved to spend up to $2,500 for a bus and to partially pay for the meal for up to 50 seniors for a trip to be determined for the week of October 5th.  Second by Babcock. Motion carried unanimously.

5. Fall Fair:
The fall fair will be held on October 3rd from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The secretary will send a memo to all town departments and organizations asking how they will participate and will draft an ad for the Carriage Towne News and Eagle Tribune.
The secretary will send out an e-mail asking the members select a task from the following list:

  • Purchase food and supplies and get someone to do the cooking/serving.
  • Contact a DJ
  • Get the Bounce House
  • Contact a reptile or wildlife place
  • Contact Mad Science and/or other entertainment
  • Contact Trisha re: Remax Balloon
  • Get Pony Rides
  • Get donations/raffle prizes
  • Get decorations
  • Update the signs and place around town
The commission will vote on all costs at the next meeting.  Bailey will contact the Boy Scouts; Babcock will contact the Girl Scouts.

6. Other Business:
Bailey asked the secretary to purchase a calculator for the office.

Bailey asked the secretary to contact the swim director and ask him to inventory the items at the beach.  Babcock will inventory the items in the office; an inventory has already been done for Greenie Park.

Babcock received a flyer for the Monarchs Recreation night, November 7th.  The cost is $11 per person.  Recreation will advertise the event and vote on purchasing tickets at the next meeting.  Unsold tickets can be returned.

Items for next agenda: vote on costs for fall fair, finalize fall foliage trip, finalize inventory, and purchase equipment for Greenie Park.

Bailey turned in his resignation, effective as of December 31, 2009, after more than 10 years of excellent and dedicated service to Newton Recreation.  He will continue to offer tennis lessons and help out with events as time allows.

7. Adjourn: Bailey called the meeting adjourned at 8:43 pm.
