June 24, 2009

1. Call to Order:
Chairman Rick Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:54 pm with the following members present: Chairman Rick Bailey, Vice Chair Deb Holden, Bob Donovan, BOS ex officio via conference call and Alternate/Secretary Lisa Babcock.  Minutes were transcribed and typed by Lisa Babcock.

Bailey appointed Babcock to stand in for the evening.

2. Volleyball Court:
Bailey said the Boy Scouts would be at the beach over the weekend and will take a look at the volleyball net.  Babcock will contact Frank Gibbs about a volleyball clinic and also what type of net to buy.  Holden will do some online research into volleyball nets.

3. Summer Schedule: Holden revised the summer schedule. Bailey said tennis lessons will be given Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 pm starting the week of July 6th.

Holden said she got a price for Coco Key Water Park at $15 per person – a deposit may be required.

4. Fall Fair Date Set: The fall fair date was set for October 3rd.

5. Fire Extinguisher at Greenie Park: Babcock will contact NBSA and ask them to remove the old fire extinguisher – at it was purchased by NBSA but is not the right type for the building and has been replaced by the Safety Committee.

6. Swim Program: Swim Director Jon Holden arrived at 8:30 pm.  He brought in 3 additional swim registrations.  

An emergency drill will be held at the Town Beach on Saturday, June 27th at 10:00 am.  Mr. Holden said all the beach personnel will attend.  The fire department and police department will participate. Donovan will contact the PD and FD.  Bailey will contact the Tribune.

  • Other Business:
Bailey moved to reimburse Erica Crawford in the amount of $545.00 for supplies and prizes purchased for the After Prom Party.  Second by Holden. Motion carried unanimously.

Bailey moved to amend the Water Country Ticket Sales Instructions sheet to allow Newton and Kingston residents to pay by check.  Second by Holden. Motion carried unanimously.

Donovan said he will provide a quote for constructing a bulletin board for the town beach.  The bulletin board will be 3’ x 4’ and the top will be approximately 7’ high.  We also need a holder for flyers, plexiglass doors and a roof.

Donovan will review the instructions to install the bench at the town beach.

Babcock will contact Selectman McCarthy to notify her of the drill.

Holden moved to spend up to $268 out of the checking account on a black 9-bike bike rack for the town beach and up to $125 for shipping. Second by Bailey. Motion carried unanimously.

Bailey moved to reimburse Packer Meadows up to $100 to be paid out of senior programs for food and supplies for a 4th of July party. Second by Holden. Motion carried unanimously.

Bailey moved to purchase 2 guard tubes at $39.00 each plus shipping out of town beach supplies.  Second by Holden. Motion carried unanimously.

Bailey moved to purchase 1 large and 1 medium rain jacket for life guards to keep in the guard shack at $34 each plus shipping out of town beach supplies.  Second by Holden Motion carried unanimously.

Holden suggested getting a large umbrella for the lifeguard table. Bailey said to purchase one and she will be reimbursed.  She will also price out a canopy to be used for arts and crafts and other events.

Holden suggested getting a banner and/or sign for events that has the logo and says “Newton Recreation”.  Babcock will contact Staples and Kathy Crossman to get the logo made up without the address and also to get the circular logo without the text.

Bailey informed the Commission that a boy scout working on paperwork for the pavilion at Greenie Park.

8. Adjourn: Bailey called the meeting adjourned at 10:15 pm.
