May 27, 2009

1. Call to Order:
Chairman Rick Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:17 pm with the following members present: Chairman Rick Bailey, Vice Chair Deb Holden, Bob Donovan, BoS ex officio, and Alternate/Secretary Lisa Babcock.  Minutes were transcribed and typed by Lisa Babcock.

Bailey appointed Babcock to stand in for the evening.

2. Memorial Day Parade re-cap: The parade was well attended and refreshments were served to a large crowd. Bailey said that Col. Voss is doing a survey to get information on how to improve the Newton and Kingston parades.  Bailey suggested starting the parades in Newton since many of the vets are from Kingston and want to return to Kingston right after the parade.

3. Summer Programs: Holden informed the commission about the summer program schedule.

Beach signups will be held June 16th, 17th, and 18th at the town beach from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  There will be contact information provided for those who can't make the signup nights.

The swim lessons will begin on June 22nd and will run for 5 weeks. (The commission discussed running a 6 week session but felt the budget could not support it.)

Lifeguards will be on duty from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm weekdays and 10:00 am – 6:00 pm weekends.

Holden requested information about the tennis program from Rick. (Dates/Times, etc.)

Apple Hill golf lessons for beginners: Mondays 10:30 am - 11:30 am, $50.
Holden was also looking into advanced classes if there is sufficient interest.  Bailey suggested Granite Fields for the advanced classes.

Arts & Crafts, Thursdays at the town beach 10:00 am – 12:00 noon. Starting July 9th through August 13th (6 weeks).

Babcock will contact Fairpoint regarding the movie night.

Beach Party, Saturday July 25th 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (rain date July 26th).

Holden said the other things she is looking into are: mini golf, Leo's Super Bowl, Mad Science, Cinema 95, volleyball lessons, surf lessons and riding lessons.

Bailey said he will contact Dean Mace of Empower Martial Arts to see if he is interested in doing a program (possibly at the beach).

4. Swim Program: Swim Director, Jon Holden arrived at 8:00 pm. He has been working on getting lifeguards – currently he has about 5 returning guards.

He said swim lessons for levels 1-4 are held on Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays and lessons for levels 5 & 6 are Monday through Friday.

Babcock will contact Kim Hughes or Mary Winglass about background checks and submit an ad for the web for lifeguards.  Guards must be Red Cross Certified in lifeguard and CPR.

Bailey said the Police Chief wants to do an emergency response drill on the beach with all the lifeguards and swim aids. Donovan will contact the fire department to see if they will also participate.  A date will be set for the drill at the next meeting.

Donovan will ask the Chief Streeter if the guards can have a two-way radio.

5. Town Beach: The Boy Scouts will install the bench.  Bailey will look into getting a net and some volleyballs and beach balls.

6. Logo Contest: The commission reviewed the entries for the logo contest.

Bailey moved to select a design by Kathy Crossman as the winning design. Eight honorable mentions were also awarded. Second by Donovan. Motion carried unanimously.

Babcock will contact the winner and will arrange for a photo for the newspaper. The winning prize is: 2 Water Country tickets, 2 restaurant gift certificates and 4 Leo's Super Bowl tickets. The honorable mention winners will each receive a Leo's Bowl ticket.

7. Senior Programs: Holden suggested a fall foliage trip to include Golden Pond and lunch at the Turkey Farm.

Babcock will contact Kingston Rec to see if they have any summer trips planned.

8. Adjourn:
Bailey called the meeting adjourned at 9:29 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Lisa Babcock, Secretary
Newton Recreation Commission
