Call to order
Chairman Rick Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:45 pm with the following members present: Nancy Slombo and Deb Holden. Minutes were recorded and transcribed by secretary/alternate, Lisa Babcock.
Bailey appointed Alternate Lisa Babcock to stand in for the evening.
Other Business:
Slombo asked the secretary to contact NBSA and remind them to forward specifications regarding field maintenance at Greenie Park so that several quotes can be obtained in order to prepare next year's budget.
The secretary will review the LWCF Grant information for the next meeting.
The Commission discussed the Kingston Recreation seniors program and decided to try and meet with Kingston Recreation in January to discuss the possibility of working on some joint programs for Newton & Kingston seniors in 2009.
Kingston Recreation has invited Newton seniors to attend a luncheon buffet and wine tasting at Zorvino Vineyards in Sandown on October 22nd.
2009 Preliminary Budget:
Bailey suggested that members review the 2008 budget for the October 29th meeting. Slombo stated that the park maintenance line may need to be increased next year.
The Commission will review the 2008 budget, determine if there are any other purchases to be made and finalize the 2009 budget at the next meeting.
Fall Festival
The Fall Festival has been rescheduled to October 11th due to rain. Holden informed the Commission that 2 of the roadside signs have been stolen. Her husband has discussed their disappearance with the Newton Police.
The following members will be on hand on Saturday: Rick Bailey, Deb Holden and Lisa Babcock. There may be some Boy Scouts available to help out as their scheduled trip may be cancelled. There will be several Girl Scouts available.
Holden has asked the SRMS Student Council for volunteers as well.
Bailey will pick up food for the concession stand. Boy Scouts and/or Girl Scouts will likely run the concession stand.
Holden has organized a clean-up for Friday and will invite Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and NBSA players to help out.
The bouncy house, pony rides and Mad Science are scheduled to appear. The DJ will also be there.
After a number of phone calls, Zoo Creatures/NERDS finally confirmed that they will be attending. Holden had contacted some other animal based entertainment just in case NERDS cancelled; one of those, Wildlife Encounters was very professional and responded quickly with information for providing a show. The Commission considered dropping NERDS from the schedule and changing to Wildlife Encounters at a lesser cost.
Babcock will find out if NERDS has already been paid when the town offices open in the afternoon and if not, Holden may contact NERDS.
The Police Department may send a cruiser and will have an officer available for the kids' road race. The Fire Department has not responded. Acios and Fair Point will be there. Babcock will contact the Conservation Commission to see if they will attend.
The following advertising has been done: signs posted around town and at town hall, web site, flyers at middle school and Memorial School, flyers posted in convenience stores and post offices as well as "take one" flyers at stores, also advertised in newspapers.
Bills:
Bailey reviewed a statement from the GreensKeeper. All but one invoice has already been paid. Bailey said to wait for a copy of the invoice, don't pay from the statement.
A bill was received for Screamin' Green for August and September.
Other Business:
Bailey informed the Commission that he met with the Board of Selectmen and discussed trash pickup at Greenie Park. The road crew has agreed to empty the trash barrels at Greenie as needed.
Also the Board approved the dedication of the volleyball court in memory of Luke Mansfield.
Adjourn:
Slombo moved to adjourn. Bailey called the meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Lisa Babcock, Secretary
Newton Recreation Commission
