Minutes
Call to order
Chairman Rick Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:40 PM with the following Commission members in attendance: Rick Bailey, Chairman; Bob Donovan, BOS ex officio; and members: Gary Nelson and Nancy Slombo. Minutes were recorded by secretary, Lisa Babcock. Also in attendance: Jon Holden, swim director.
Swim Contracts/Beach Update
Bailey opened discussion on the swim program contracts by recommending that swim aids be started at labor grade 1 or $7.54/hour and life guards be started at labor grade 5 or $9.16-11.45/hour. Motion by Bailey to use labor grade 1 for swim aids and labor grade 5 for life guards. Discussion: the guards must stay at the beach for their regularly scheduled hours including during rain and heat with the exception of lightning storms. Second by Nelson. Passed 4-0.
Deb Stewart arrived 7:50 pm.
Motion by Bailey to pay swim director Jon Holden $515 per week for 9 weeks beginning June 25, 2007 which includes a 3% raise. Second by Nelson. Passed 5-0.
Donovan mentioned a few incidents that occurred last year: people brought dogs onto the beach during business hours and some non-residents were fishing off of the beach also during business hours. Donovan told Holden to remind the life guards to call the police if people were breaking the rules and not responding to the guards’ requests to stop or if the guards felt intimidated by individuals or their behavior. Donovan will check with the police department about securing cell phones for the guards.
The Commission then reviewed the swim contracts. Motion by Bailey to approve the contracts for swim aides and life guards as follows:
Alex Hodgman, swim aid, 7 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $7.54/hr
Keith Hallock, swim aid, 7 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $7.54/hr
Ashley Moser, swim aid, 7 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $7.54/hr
Brittney Miller, swim aid, 7 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $7.54/hr
Louis Pasto, life guard, 9 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $9.16/hr
Kelly O’Halloran, life guard, 9 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $9.16/hr
Katherine Burke, life guard, 9 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $9.39/hr
Dave Malek, life guard, 9 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $9.39/hr
Zach Martin, life guard, 9 weeks beginning 6/25/07 at $9.39/hr
Second by Nelson. Passed unanimously.
Theresa Gridley arrived at 8:00 pm.
Holden explained that much of the equipment used for the swim program was old and worn and needed to be replaced. He had researched the costs for kick boards, life jackets and hand paddles. Motion by Stewart to spend up to $700 for life jackets, kick boards, hand paddles and swim noodles for the swim program. Second by Bailey. Passed unanimously.
Holden also notified the board that the old raft was in the water and sinking and needed to be removed from the beach. Motion by Bailey to seek selectmen’s input on how to dispose of the old raft. Second by Donovan. Passed unanimously.
Greenie Park
Slombo to contact Sea of Green to instruct them not to do any more maintenance on Greenie III.
Motion by Bailey to spend up to $125 for supplies for Greenie Park cleanup. Second by Gridley. Passed unanimously.
Other Business
1) Bingo Night
Donovan will check with CPFG about the availability of the hall for a bingo night.
2) Karate Program
Motion by Nelson to approve the Karate program to be run by resident Dean Mace; with the details to be agreed upon at a later meeting and pending a background check. Second by Bailey. Passed unanimously.
