Secretary’s Report – Mary Riordan
John Meserve made a motion to accept the minutes of October 8, 2012. Cheryl Saunders seconded the motion. The motion passed on a unanimous vote.
Treasurer’s Report – Bill Landry
The Checking expenses were for the Fall Festival and Keane Fire Safety. The Money Market income was from interest and Fall Festival Sponsors. Expenses were Fall Festival, Fabric Repair supplies and Branch Removal at the Schoolhouse. Cheryl Saunders made a motion to accept the Treasurers’ Reports. Karen O’Malley seconded the motion. The motion passed on a unanimous vote.
Old Business:
Fall Festival Update: Kathy Meserve reported the Fall Festival was a rousing success. She thanked everyone who contributed to the event. The gross revenue was $3245; the expenses were 379.41 for a net profit of $2,865.59. This is the second highest profit for the event. We sold 156 tickets and 64 people attended the event. This is the second highest attendance for the event. We also had the highest number of sponsors this year.
Curtains without Borders: Bill Landry reported he sent a letter to the Selectmen about turning over ownership to the Historical Society. It looks like the Grange will be giving their curtain to the NH state Grange. We are on the Selectman’s agenda for November 20th when Bill will speak to the matter. Bill indicated we will still apply for the grant to restore the curtains even if the Town retains ownership of the curtains.
Removal of branches etc. at Primary School: Bill Landry reported that Sunrise Tree Service removed the branches and small trees at the Schoolhouse. Ralph Estabrook removed some of the logs. Ron Saunders reported he removed the logs from the left side of the building. Bill spoke briefly with Barbara Gallant about the tree between the properties to see if she knew where the lot line was. Bill spoke to Bruce Anderson of Sunrise Tree Service to get a price to remove the tree. Bruce said he could do it for $1,250 and will trim the tree around the wires at the front of the building. Bill was going to check with the town on the lot line. Cheryl Saunders said the Town does not have any maps with accurate lot lines. She also said the State is trimming tree branches back 10 feet from the wires. If the tree is marked the State would be trimming it. Bill indicated we will probably do this in the spring.
New Business:
Annual donation to Newton Food Pantry: Cheryl Saunders made a motion to donate $100 to the Newton Food Pantry. Karen O’Malley seconded the motion. The motion passed on a unanimous vote. Bill Landry will get ten $10 Gift cards at Market Basket.
Christmas Tree lighting ceremony: Cheryl Saunders will get the luminaries from Lisa Fortin. Ron will put the lights on the tree. Diane Morin will get new lights through Home Depot’s light replacement offer. She’ll get 6 strands. Mary Riordan made a motion to have Diane Morin purchase the lights for the tree. Kathy Meserve seconded the motion. The motion passed on a unanimous vote.
Cheryl Saunders will get cookies at BJs and ask Diane Lozeau from Common Grounds about hot chocolate. The tree lighting event will be on Sunday December 9th starting at 5:00 PM with the lighting at 6:00PM. Bill Landry will send Sue Mears an email with the date. She had indicated the Library would have their ornament making in conjunction with the lighting. Bill Landry will call George Marshall about being Santa. Kathy Meserve thinks she has a CD player, Karen O’Malley has an amplifier. Ron Saunders will bring 2 tables. Bill Landry will post the information for the lighting in the usually places.
Put VCR tapes on DVDs (~ 20): Bill Landry spoke to someone who would copy our VCR tapes on DVD for $15 each including DVD media. Diane Morin will check on using the Town equipment to do this.
Other:
Reports of Curators & Committee Chairpersons:
Curators: Ron Saunders reported he left the items he received from Fire Chief Ingalls along with the accessioning forms on the counter at the Schoolhouse.
Ron reported he has not done anything on the carriage repairs. Karen O’Malley suggested we should put them on blocks so the wheels don’t flatten. There was discussion on getting 12 jack stands and 12 cinder blocks. Ron will look into this.
Historian: No report
Archivist: Accessioning – Karen O’Malley reported she and Barb DiBartolomeo have taken pictures of the items on table 3. She said it is too cold now to continue in the Schoolhouse. She took the loose pictures and will put them in binders and accession the binder. She submitted a receipt to Bill for reimbursement for the purchase of plastic inserts and binders. Her plan is to do the large case and the back room next year. Bill commented on the great progress they’ve made this year.
Programs: Diane Morin reported she has not heard back from Mr. Knoblock about the Covered Bridge presentation potentially in July. The spring Two Old Guys presentation and the fall Lizzie Borden presentation are all set.
Blanket donated by Jim Doggett: John Meserve suggested we put the Newton 250th anniversary blanket on an online auction since we already have one hanging the Schoolhouse. There was discussion on how we could put it on eBay and whether there would be interest in this outside Newton.
Correspondence: Bill Landry received a flyer on a Preservation Workshop put on by the NH Historical Society in Concord. Bill sent the information to Courtney to see if she’d like to attend. The Society would pay the $55 fee.
Bill Landry received an email from Janet Peterson asking about Pine Ridge Grove Island on Country Pond. She had spent summers there as a child. Bill forwarded the email to members asking if they knew of it. Nancy Wrigley responded there was a Pine Ridge Grove in Wilder’s Grove but no island. Bill sent the information back to Janet.
Next Meeting: Monday December 10, 2012 at the Merrimac Savings Bank. Bill Landry reminded the members we would be electing officers for next year.
Cheryl Saunders made a motion to adjourn. Karen O’Malley seconded the motion. The motion passed on a unanimous vote. Bill Landry adjourned the meeting at 7:50PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Riordan
