Old Business:
Schoolhouse Repairs – Bill Landry reported the lumber for the floor joists and sub-floor have been purchased and delivered to the Schoolhouse. Bill estimates the sub-floor will be completed in the next 3-4 weeks. Ann Miles has offered to sell us floor boards she had removed from a building at $6.00/sq ft. We have planned to use pine floor boards at significantly less cost so Bill told her we are not interested. During this meeting Bill received a phone call from Rob Hayes. Rob indicated he may put the footings in this weekend.
Grange Hall Stage Curtain – Bill Landry reminded the member last year we decided not to take any item on loan. When the Schoolhouse is finished Ron will take measurements of the curtain to confirm we have a wall large enough to display it.
3rd Annual Wine & Cheese Social status – Bill received an email report from Kathy Meserve. On September 14th, 140 Corporate fund raising letters will be mailed. Posters will be put up when Kathy & John return from vacation. Bill has started to print the tickets. Tickets will be available at the Town Hall, Library and the Newton and Merrimac Bank locations. Kathy will submit the event to the newspapers. Kathy suggested Flag Hill Winery in Lee. Anyone with other suggestions should get them to Kathy. The issue with wine tasting is rinsing the glass between wines. Sally Woodman suggested a pitcher of water and something to dump the water in. Bill indicated the committee will work on this issue. Bill is looking
for suggestions for raffle items. He received a gift certificate from Acapulco’s restaurant in Amesbury, MA. Irene Nally suggested Mr. Butland’s wooden map of New Hampshire for the raffle. Bill will get the scrapbooks from Myrtle Rogers and Pat Wonson has four books of house pictures to display during the event.
New Business:
Society display at Plan NH Weekend – Bill Landry received a request from Charles Whitman from the Planning Board for some of the 250th Anniversary books. Bill has them at the Bank for Charles to pick up. There was discussion on what the purpose of this Plan NH project is. Pat Wonson volunteered to man a table on Saturday September 26th. Bill will get Pat this display items a few days before the event.
Participation in Newton Family Day Fair Sat. Oct 3rd – Since several members are not available on this day it was decided we would not participate this year. Bill will notify Mr. Bailey of our decision.
Annual NH Historical Society dues $40.00 &
Annual Association of Historical Societies of NH $10.00 – Pat Wonson made a motion to appropriate $50.00 for both dues. Karen O’Malley seconded the motion. The motion passed on a unanimous vote.
Pat Wonson reported she has returned the old 1988 picture books to the Library. She has compiled a new set of pictures in 4 new books for the Historical Society. Pat indicated she was not going to submit a bill for the supplies she purchased to make the books. Bill reminded her we had already appropriated money for this project. Karen O’Malley suggested we scan the books and store them on CD or DVDs. Karen O’Malley, Mary Riordan and Diane Morin volunteered to work on this project over the winter.
Correspondence:
Mygenealogist.com link to society web site – Bill Landry received an email from this organization indicating they have put a link to our web site on their web site and asking that we do the same for them. Bill checked with Mary Winglass at Town Hall. She indicated we cannot do that because they are a for profit organization.
Other:
Meeting location sign at schoolhouse – Bill Landry was notified that someone had gone to the schoolhouse to attend our meeting and we were not there. He has posted a sign on the door indicating the meetings are being held at the Merrimac Savings Bank.
Irene Nally reported that Terry Caldwell, the Librarian, approached her about working together on a project for the Historical Society to fulfill a community service requirement for a course she is taking. Irene suggested they inventory the closet in the Marshall House. She needs a couple gentlemen to move the items into another room.
Mary Marshall & Karen O’Malley reported they went to Zorbino’s Winery and purchased 16 bottles of wine for the wine social. There was discussion on whether the event was a wine tasting or wine social. Mary Marshall will email the list to Bill so the committee can review it.
Sally Woodman suggested we consider having a fund raising event of an appraiser who would appraise items brought by the public. There would be a fee for the appraisal that would be divided between the appraiser and the Historical Society. It would be like an Antique Road Show for local people. She asked if anyone knew of an appraiser in the area that would consider doing this. Sally volunteered to get more details of this kind of event.
Bill Landry thanked Judy Denno for opening the bank for our meeting.
Next meeting is Tuesday October 13, 2009 at the Merrimac Savings Bank
Ron Saunders made a motion to adjourn. Marilyn Landry seconded the motion. The motion passed on a unanimous vote. Bill Landry adjourned the meeting at 7:55PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Riordan, Secretary
