Minutes
The Mount Desert School Committee held a meeting on Wednesday, 7 October 2009, with the
following members present: Chair Heather Jones, Gail Marshall, and Brian Reilly
Members absent: Charlie Wray and Laura Hendricks
Also present: Scott McFarland and Rob Liebow
CALL TO ORDER
Heather Jones called the meeting to order at 4:03 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
MOVED by Brian Reilly, seconded by Gail Marshall and unanimously voted to approve the
minutes of 9/16/09 as written.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Principal McFarland presented his report to the committee including an update on progress with
differentiated instruction among other projects (see attached Principal’s Report)
DISCUSSION ITEMS
• MEA presentation: Principal McFarland presented the 2009 spring MEA results to the
committee
• Boiler Repair Update: Principal McFarland received three quotes for the work ranging
from $4,095 to $6,900
• Field Drainage Issues update: Tony Smith (head of the public works department) has
been working with the school regarding drainage issues on the ball field with regard to
the storm drain system that can be overwhelmed at times of heavy rain. It appears that
part of the problem is also a drainage issue on the field that is unrelated to the storm drain
issues. More observations and consultation will occur.

• Appointment of High School and MDIRSS Voting Members:
MOVED by Brian Reilly, seconded by Gail Marshall and unanimously voted to approve
the following slate of voting members for a term of 4 months (thru the January meetings):
High School: Charlie Wray, Brian Reilly and Gail Marshall
AOS: Charlie Wray, Laura Hendricks and Heather Jones
OTHER BUSINESS

EXECUTIVE SESSION
MOVED by Brian Reilly, seconded by Gail Marshall and unanimously voted to enter executive
session at 5:19 p.m. pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A. § 405(6)(A) for the purpose of discussing a
personnel evaluation.
At 5:36 p.m. the committee came out of executive session.
ADJOURNMENT
MOVED by Gail Marshall, seconded by Brian Reilly and unanimously voted to adjourn the
meeting at 5:37 p.m.

Principal’s Report
10/7/09
1. The Flu Clinic has been rescheduled to November 9th and will include both the
seasonal flu shot as well as the H1N1 shot
2. Our 7th and 8th grade students recently participated in the annual island0000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:9pt;color:#000000;">4. We have recently hired Garrett Curtis as a longe are
charging $4.25 per adult meal so I believe we have two options of keeping the adult
charge the same and subsidizing each meal by 32 cents or increase the cost of an
adult meal to $4.57
10. Differentiated Instruction Update:
• DI continues to be a focus of our team meetings and will be the focus of our
next staff meeting on October 19.
• Our staff is also starting our first book study “The Parents we Mean to be” –
though the title of the book makes you wonder about the connection to DI,
the book deals with parent
time of another conference on math instruction that a team from MDES will
be attending
