ACADIA DISPOSAL DISTRICT
Meeting of the Board of Directors
June 11, 2009 at the Somesville Fire House
PRESENT: Robin Bennett (SWH), Ellen Brawley (clerk), Peter Rees and Robert Kates (Trenton), Robert Roxby and Beverly Wiegler (Frenchboro), Elliott Spiker (Tremont)
ABSENT: Cynthia Lief (Cranberry), Tony Smith (Mount Desert)
VISITORS: Damaris Smith and Ross Worcester (EMR), Laurie Schreiber (Bar Harbor Times), speaker Victor Horton (MRRA).
Call to order: Robin called the meeting to order at 9:30.
SPEAKER: There being as yet no quorum, Victor Horton proceeded to give us an update on the status of single-stream recycling as it appears in the Bangor area. He said that single stream generally encourages residents to recycle more, thus reducing the amount of MSW that must go to PERC. We would need a local tipping location as processing facilities are so distant. The bottom line is that unless prices for recycled products go up considerably, the transportation costs make single stream non-economical for us at this time.
MOTION: (Rees, Spiker) to approve the minutes of April 16, 2009. Carried 4-0.
Treasurer’s Report: Elliott reported that our expenses for the 18 month fiscal year were very close to the budgeted amounts. He will invoice the towns for the new fiscal year and prepare for the audit. He requested approval to pay two invoices to CES ($2159 and $2013) and said that Tony has received an invoice from MMA for insurance. Trenton still owes $707.21 as its share of last fall’s HHW collection.
MOTION: (Bennett, Rees) to pay the invoices to CES ($2159 and $2013) pending availability of funds. Carried 4-0.
MOTION: (Bennett, Rees) to pay the MMA invoice, pending availability of funds. Carried 4-0.
ANNUAL REPORT: Discussion tabled due to Tony’s absence.
RECYCLABLE COLLECTION: Trenton’s dumpsters aren’t being unloaded in a timely fashion. Peter will get Trenton to deal directly with Gott’s. EMR is open daily except Sundays to accept the loads.
Assignments per director:
Tony, Elliott and Robin: EMR negotiations.
OTHER: Bob Kates said this would be his last meeting. Peter Rees is now the official representative from Trenton.
Trash Fair: Peter said he’d talked to Supt Liebow about next year. They’d like to make special recognition for a student-generated project for reduction of waste, that actually gets put into effect. This might start with a waste audit, and might expand to energy etc. For the 8th grade and up this would qualify as a service learning project, required by the state. Bob Kates said he’d be happy to do an in-service training day for teachers, and Beverly indicated she’d like to be involved, and would network with the other islands.
NEXT MEETING: Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 9:30 am, Somesville Fire House.
MOTION: (Bennett, Spiker) to go into executive session. Carried 5-0.
Executive session: 10:45 to 11:50.
MOTION: to exit executive session. Carried 4-0.
MEETING ADJOURNED
Respectfully submitted,
Ellen T. Brawley
