Dan Lovitt, Hill Engineering.

Chair called the meeting to order at 4:15.

·       The applicant was informed that the zoning by-laws do not apply to the United States Post Office.
·       The applicant is asked to withdraw the petition/application
·       Robert Lazzarini requested that the board and the applicants have a joint discussion.

Post Office
Loading and unloading is done on the street.  This creates an unsafe traffic situation and an unsafe situation for the public as well as employees.  The proposal is to load and unload on the side of the building.  Space is needed for a 24’ truck.  They want to construct a loading dock on the side of the building the size of 2.5 parking spaces.

Dean Amidon suggested posting a sign that reads:  “No Parking between the hours of ____ & _____.”

Robert Lazzarini suggested that the Post Office get together with the store, police and highway departments to create additional parking spaces between the buildings and put the dock on the other side of the building.  These are not practical suggestions.

·       The truck will be there a maximum of 30 minutes each stop.  The stops are 2 times a day, 5 days a week.
·       The Board of Appeals would like to encourage the Post Office to stay.

Ray Tryon stated that backing up trucks is dangerous.

Maynard Forbes is opposed to the plan of eliminating parking spaces.  He feels that there are other solutions.

The petition for the variance/special permit was withdrawn by Dan Lovitt on behalf of the Post Office.
The chair encouraged the Petitioners to consider the concern of Monterey, especially those relating to safety issues in the congested town center, when undertaking the project.

The Board unanimously approved the withdrawal.

The Hearing was closed at 4:58
