Select Board
Minutes of the 2nd homeowners meeting of 8/11/18
Meeting Opened at: 10am
Select Board Members Present: Carol Edelman, Chairperson, Kenneth Basler and Donald Coburn
Items discussed:
- Reasons for the meeting - to keep second homeowners informed, help them feel part of the community, get input. We will take questions at the end.
- The new owners of the Monterey General Store, Kevin and Chapin Fish gave everyone an update on the store and answered questions.
- Highlights of the past year (in this case, July through July) include:
a. Progress on Monterey Library. We were awarded the grant from the MBLC, and are in advanced planning and budgeting stages, preparing to begin construction, hopefully this fall.
b. General Store has been purchased, and we are all eager to see it re-open. We hear that extensive renovations are likely, opening as a cafe, office, and [we hope] at least partly a store as well. Probably not until later fall.
c. Police - we hired an outstanding new Sergeant, Brian Fahey, and now have an excellent force comprised of well-trained, helpful, cheerful professionals who are keeping up to date on training and community relations.
d. Town Hall operations are functioning smoothly, and we have been working hard to improve predictability of various administrative and Clerk office hours for the convenience of residents.
e. Infrastructure - Director of Operations Shawn Tryon, along with his DPW crew, are continuing to maintain and improve roads. Curtis Road Bridge repair project is underway this month, which, although you may not notice the difference, will be safer for many years to come, with minimal disruption of traffic.
f. Parks Department has addressed concerns about the safety of the surface on the basketball court, and this should be fixed and available again soon.
g. Community Development Block Grant - Monterey was awarded a substantial grant, for the second year, to facilitate and finance housing repairs and upgrades for residents and families in need of assistance, within income guidelines.
h. Last but not least, the (not so new anymore) Transfer Station has been in operation over a year, and continues to impress residents and neighboring communities with our efficiency and especially the recycling programs. We have held the line to a very reasonable yearly fee. There is a new community composting program, and bins for home use are available at minimal cost.
- The Board is working with Berkshire Regional Planning Commission to explore designation as a Green Community which would enable us to access energy saving technology for town and residents.
- Updates on the cell tower and broadband were given
