Minutes of the meeting of 1/10/18

Meeting Opened at: 9am
Select Board Members Present: Steve Weisz, Chairperson, Carol Edelman and Kenneth Basler

Also in attendance: Dennis Lynch, Shawn Tryon, Gareth Backhaus, George McGurn, Lauren Gaherty, Bob Lazzarini

Miscellaneous Items Reviewed:
  • Warrants were signed.
  • Response to Jon Sylbert of the Finance Committee regarding monthly reports was drafted and will be sent.
  • Letters were drafted and signed which will notify the 3 camps and Gould Farm that effective 1/3/18 the fire safety inspection fee will be raised to $350.
  • Kenn updated the Board on the Broadband Committee’s meeting held on Monday as well as a letter they will be working on to send to MBI with regards to the lack of progress in Monterey in getting the funds released.  A draft letter was reviewed and signed.  Carol recused herself from this matter.
  • Minutes from 1/3/18 were approved.
  • The Board met with Lauren Gaherty of Berkshire Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) and Dennis Lynch, grant writer to discuss the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (related to climate change and vulnerability) grant we received which works together with the Hazard Mitigation Grant.  Shawn Tryon and Gareth Backhaus were also present.  Our Hazard Mitigation Plan is currently expired and the plan is to begin working on that.  BRPC has the contract to help us build the MVP plan which requires 80 hours of staff time from Monterey.  First step will be to organize a working group.  The Board wants to have a discussion about all the information presented today prior to committing anyone or any amount of time.
  • The Board met with George McGurn, Selectman of Egremont to discuss the school district and the Egremont School.  George gave a history of their school and recent meetings leading up to his request for a letter of support from Monterey.  George states that the capacity of school is 21 (19 students and 2 staff) and there have been 31 students identified as wanting to enroll in the fall for the Egremont School.  Egremont hopes to start construction when the ground thaws and be ready for September but there is a backup plan/location should the building not be ready in time.
  • Administrative Assistant’s weekly report was reviewed.
