Minutes of the meeting of 10/4/17

Meeting Opened at: 10:30am
Select Board Members Present: Steve Weisz, Chairperson and Kenneth Basler

Also in attendance: Chief Backhaus, Brian Fahey, Tricia Zucco, BJ Johnson

Miscellaneous Items Reviewed:
  • The Board met with the Chief Backhaus and Brian Fahey, candidate for the full time police position.  They discussed the position and the offer for employment.  A motion was made to appoint Brian Fahey as the Sergeant for the agreed upon terms.  The motion was seconded.  Discussion proceeded regarding an email from Carol stating that she fully supports the hiring of Brian and any offer made.  The motion was approved unanimously.
  • Corey Wiley from the Berkshire Record came in to ask questions regarding the request to the school committee to rotate their meetings amongst the 5 towns.  The Select Board clarified that they were in favor of the school committee holding one meeting a year in each of the participating towns.
  • Both Steve and Kenn spoke with the Clerk regarding her budget and spending to date which was mentioned at a previous Select Board meeting.  Terry has spoken with our Accountant and corrected the extra hours her assistant had worked; originally charged to the assistant line item and they should’ve been charged to census.  Terry also provided a summary of the items she and Meagan have been working to correct from 2012 to the present.  The Board was satisfied that all is being handled properly.
  • M. Noe updated the Board on the insurance for Bally Gally; we have been grandfathered on the current policy until June 30th at which time we will need to explore other insurance options.
  • Bally Gally lease: The Board agreed to renew the lease at the same rent through June 30th.  It will be a shorter term to allow us to address the insurance issue and any others that may arise.
  • FY19 budget process – The Board agreed to the draft memo/budget schedule, reviewed the 5 year spending history provided by M. Noe and agreed to hold preliminary meetings with individual departments, a finance committee member, a select board member and M. Noe during the months of October and November.  A preliminary budget will then be given to the Finance Committee to review and have more comprehensive meetings with the departments.  February and March will be set aside for the Finance Committee and Select Board to meet on a final budget to be presented.
  • Warrants were signed.
  • Minutes from 9/27/17 were approved.
  • Administrative Assistant’s weekly report was reviewed.
  • Police Chief’s weekly report was reviewed.
A motion was made and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting at: 11:15am
