Monterey Select Board
Minutes of the meeting of 5/3/10
Meeting Opened at: 4:00pm
Select Board Members Present: Scott Jenssen, Chairperson and Jon Sylbert
Also in attendance for parts of the meeting: Sue Protheroe for the Monterey News, Michael Storch
The board met with Police Chief, Gareth Backhaus to review the following items:
1. False alarms at Tyringham Rd, Woodland Dr., Beartown Mtn Rd., Hupi Rd and Main Rd (2). The majority of these calls are usually because the systems have not been properly maintained or are set up to a very sensitive level. Scott asked if the majority of these calls were from the same alarm company; G. Backhaus will have M. Noe cross reference this to see if there is a pattern.
2. Assisted the F.D. with traffic for a controlled burn on Main Rd.
3. Abandoned 911 call on Main Rd; dialing error.
4. Domestic disturbance on Pixley Rd.
5. Tree across Main Rd which took the power out for some time.
6. Domestic call on Hupi Rd; an emergency protective order was issued.
7. Report of a set of keys lost.
8. Assisted the F.D. with a fire alarm at Carrington Battelle.
9. G. Backhaus reported that Officer Johnson is working out very well.
10. The Board asked the status of the new engine for the 4wd had been put in yet; it hasn’t. The Chief noted that one of the reasons there is a need for the new engine is that an internal coolant leak was found.
Miscellaneous Select Board Items Reviewed:
1. Warrants were signed.
2. A motion was made to appoint Jonathan Sylbert as the Chairperson which was seconded and unanimously approved.
3. Jonathan informed the Board that the Constable (Raymond Tryon) came in to inform the Board that he was not on the ballot and therefore has not been voted in for another 3 year term. Town Counsel will be contacted regarding what needs to be done.
4. Michael Storch asked about the driveway entrance that was shown in Joe Baker’s presentation for the WMH property. M. Storch questioned who authorized for the driveway entrance to go there versus the original proposed entrance. He feels that the entrance off Rt 23 seems to present a lot of safety concerns but now that the garden has been started the driveway can no longer be considered off of New Marlboro Rd. Jon noted that the article was only for the expenditure of the money not the location of the driveway. The Board agreed that the current location off of Rt 23 is not the best location especially if the dog park is constructed.
5. The Select Board has been invited to a meeting of the library trustees regarding the room they’d like to reclaim from the Historical Society as the library really needs the space for their growing activities. It was noted that the library building belongs to the Town and has its own board. M. Storch noted that the Historical Society has not utilized that room publically in a long time and the stuff that’s in there really isn’t historical like the dinner plates that belonged to Edith Wilson. M. Storch stated that several years ago the upstairs of the schoolhouse was deemed usable for storage and that would be a great spot; the Board noted that there isn’t handicap access there and would not be accessible. The Board feels that the Historical Society really needs to
remove the contents from the General Knox room, clean the mold of the items, create an inventory of the items and assess what their needs are and then approach the Town for help in meeting those needs. The Board reviewed the original agreement between the Library Trustees and the Historical Society.
6. Dean requested that S. Jenssen not march in the Memorial Day parade but rather do the presentation up there and sing the song.
A motion was made and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting at: 5:00pm
