Parks Commission Minutes Aug 5, 2009
In attendance: Gary Shaw, Valerie Zantay, Bridget Krans,, Diana Piepho
Bridget asked about the $88.00 installation fee charged on the beach phone. Gary will look into it.
Bridget reported that the changing room building permit was approved. Should we move ahead with it now or wait? Do we need to take bids? Yes, and we will ask Mark Amstead, Eric Peteson and Josh Allentuck.
Valerie reported on Denise Andrus’s phone call regarding the misuse of the corner boards at the rink. Someone had nailed them to the wall to use for BMX biking. Valerie will call Denise and the police. This lead to a discussion about the recent vandalism we have had: Shed, picnic bench, Bib Belly. Bridget will write an article for the Monterey news.
Friends of Lake Garfield reps Julio Rodriguez and Pat Rodriguez came to speak about Lakefest this year on Aug 15th (Rain date Aug 16) The asked that an extra lifeguard be on and that they will pay for that expense. The also asked that another load of sand be brought in and they will arrange it. Valerie reminded Julio to write to the Con Com requesting permission for the sand. They also requested that the parking area across from the beach be mowed. We noted that this has been overlooked all year. Diana will call Gary O’Brien about this. They also requested that the abandoned boats be removed. Diana will call the harbor master about this. Finally the Fof LG requested that the parks commission sponsor a warrant for next year’s fireworks for Lakefest. The warrant would be for $6500.00 and would cover fireworks ($6000.00) and protection ($500.00) The commission approved this request.
Wilson McLauglin House representatives Shirley Olds and Laurie Shaw came to speak to the commission about the new community center. It will be changed from a residence to recreational use on Aug. 18th. It has 28 acres, 5 of which are usable. It will take 2 years to get the project up and running and then it will be turned over to the town and fall under the jurisdiction of the parks commission. They asked for our support in this and we said yes. It will need to be added to the next mowing contract. Valerie asked who would be responsible for the up keep of the building and the reps were not sure.
Bridget brought up the garbage pick up problem. Denis was not interested in taking the job as he does not have a truck. Bridget reported that she spoke to Maynard about taking it on. He said he would get back to her, but then told the select board that he would not do it. Valerie suggested going to the select board with the problem.
Bridget reported that we need to move the handicap sign at the beach and add another handicap parking space. Diana will ask Maynard to do this.
Valerie brought up the issue of making the ice making a paid position as well as paying to have the set up paid. It was agreed that the ice making should be paid and Diana will ask Mark Makuc to submit an estimate. It was agreed that we would pay $50.00 to people who help with set up.
