Park Commission Minutes 5/6/09
Parks Commission of Monterey
Minutes from May 6, 2009
Members in attendance:
Bridget Krans, chair, Josh Allentuck, Valerie Zantay, Dianna Piepho and  Gary Shaw

  • New members Josh Allentuck and Gary Shaw were welcomed to the commission
  • The April minutes were read and accepted
  • Deam Amidon, deputy harbor master, addressed the commission regarding the beach.  He recommends that the boat ramp continue to be closed during swimming hours.  However, he would like us to move the swimming line near the ramp moved over 10-12 feet to the left.  This would be beneficial for the following reasons:  1.  Emergency boats could get in faster.  2.  It will allow kayaks to launch even during swimming hours.  3.  People launching boats after swimming hours would not have to tie and untie the lines.
  • Josh Allentuck will look into putting a post or another type of anchor in on the beach for the line to be tied to.
  • The commission asked Dean about boats coming into the small side of the lake.  He reported that Hy Rosen puts the no wake buoys up, and that he and Chief Bakus monitor speed in the small area.
  • Josh brought up the issue of a parking pass at the beach.  Pros and cons were debated.  Dump stickers could be used, but what about people who have more than one car, or renters?  What about guests?  Who would enforce it?  Bridget will explore what other beaches do.
  • The Shed at Greene Park was discussed and approved.  Dianna will look into purchasing a Rubbermaid shed that could store rakes and bases.
  • The changing room and the beach was discussed and the idea of extending the fence at the porta-potty with the floor being pallets and compost decking was agreed on.  Josh will speak to Don Torrico about this and also look into supplies.
  • Josh addressed the need for new bases at the ball field and he will research them.
  • It came to our attention that we are paying for the porta-potty at the Transfer Station.  Bridget will look into why this is coming out of our budget.
  • Diana repoted on “Jamie’s Court”  She read a letter from Scott Jervas.  The plan is for a 30 x 60 court.  The process is moving along.
  • Diana reported on the idea of a dog park that was brought up by Charles Ferris at the town meeting.  She spoke with dog officer Nora Hayes who advised against rushing into anything.  There are many issues to iron out.  Citizens who wish to speak about this issue should come to a Park Commission meeting.
  • The request of a grill at the ball field was discussed and denied for safety reasons.  Anyone wishing to grill should bring their own grill.
  • The idea of purchasing an AED for the beach was discussed and tabled for more information.  We need to know what other beaches have, how much they cost and what the fire department recommends.
  • It was voted that Bridget will do the swimming lessons first week in July and first week in Aug.
  • Phone at beach.  Cost is $100.00 per month.  Bridget  is looking into other options like a satellite phone.  She will call Verizon.
  • Joshua will fix the window in the warming room at the rink.
  • Dianna will call Tryon for rink electric bill.
  • Josh will look into fixing basketball crank.
Respectfully submitted, Valerie Zantay
