Parks commission meeting- September 5, 2007
Start time: 6:00 pm End time: 7:15 pm
Members in attendance: Jim Edelman, Leroy Thorpe, Valarie Vantay, Diana Pepho, Bridget Krans
· The commission was in agreement to make an effort to spend our budget wisely and have less money go back into the town at the end of the fiscal year.
· Jim expressed concerns that several items that were paid recently should have been paid from last fiscal budget rather than the current one.
· In an act to be pro active a list of upcoming costs was comprised as well as the beginning of a “ wish list”.
· The cost and supplier of a new playground is going to be researched as well as the idea of bringing the idea to a special town meeting. The Mill River School playground was agreed to be a good role model. The current playground is 15 years old.
· The telephone at the beach is costing $92.25 per month. The idea of getting a land line and not a pay phone and whose responsibility the payphone bill is needs to be revisited with the town.
· The town beach is officially closed. The ropes, chairs and garbage cans have all been picked up and put into storage.
· Valarie stated that the grant for the “big belly” looks like it is going through. We are waiting for final approval to put in a purchase order. The total bill will be : $8,528.00 before the grant money.
· A vote was taken to make sure that the committee agreed to have two “ big bellies”. We all agreed. The bill is for two.
· Concrete slabs need to be poured to put the compactors on. Mark Makuc will be contacted.
· One compactor will be at the beach and one at Green Park.
· Jim suggested that his team of volunteers take care of the infield on the ball park next season and Gary O’Brian just takes care of the grass. Jim also agreed to meet with Gary at the start of next season to ensure that expectations and terms of the three year contract are met.
· Lifeguards suggested two lifeguard chairs for next swim season. We need to send a thank you note for the previous chair that was donated to the town by a previous lifeguard.
· The new bench that was donated needs a coat of varnish. When Mark Makuc does the playground he can do that as well.
