Minutes for August 6, 2014 Agricultural Commission Meeting
Commission Members Present: Richard Tryon, Mark Little, Bettina Schwartz
Non-members present: Steve Weisz and Wendy Germaine
First meeting of newly formed Ag Commission during which the following general topics were touched upon:
Members elected Richard Tryon as Commission Chairman and Bettina Schwartz as Secretary.
Commission members and people in attendance discussed role/purpose of Monterey Agricultural Commission and ways in which it might be able to promote/facilitate disseminating information via cultural and educational resources;
How many farms currently exist in Monterey;
Discussed Monterey2020's idea for developing a network of land in Monterey that is available for farming - Monterey 2020 member Steven Weisz presented a sample survey to collect information, for Ag Commisision to look over;
Discussed two upcoming events that present networking/brainstorming opportunities: Monterey 2020 Potluck on August 11th, and a Dan Barber/Berkshire Grown talk at the Mahaiwe on August 18th.
Discussed lack of slaughterhouse access in western masssachusetts;
Discussed existance but not specifics of zoning by-laws of Monterey as they pertain to farming.
