Attendees: Kit Patten, Roz Halberstadter, Kathryn Roberts, Wendy Jensen, Susan Johnson, Diana Deacon, John Heffernan and Maureen Banner (ex officio, who has graciously agreed to help with her expertise and also with the publicity for upcoming events).
John advised the council that he is taking "early retirement" from the council, effective July 1, 2012, for personal reasons. He thanks all council members, past and present, for being great people to be with and work with, over the past few years.
Robin O'Herin will be presenting a songwriter's workshop, similar to last years program. There will be a Thursday (August 9) evening session, followed by a Sunday (August 12) evening session with concert, to follow, presenting the music created in the workshop sessions. Robin will be doing posters and publicity for this event, which will be held in the Church. John will call Pastor, Liz Goodman to reserve the Church.
Diane's Trail Hike, with Bonner McAlister is scheduled for this Saturday, May 19th at 10 AM.
Participation by the council in the Gould Farm Centennial celebration in 2013 was discussed. It is agreed that the council would like to be a part of one or more events. Further input from Gould Farm people will be needed in order to determine what council support can be undertaken. John will advise Bill Johnson of the need for more info. Also, Bill had asked that the council consider paying for the banner, to be suspended over Main Road, during the celebration. The council discussed that request and it was agreed that this was not something that could be deemed a "Cultural" event and, therefore, council funds should not be devoted to that project. John will advise Bill of this decision. The council also feels that Bill should consider applying for a Cultural Council Grant under the State
Program, John will advise Bill of this as well.
Kathryn, Roz and Diana reported on their meeting regarding the the Monterey Fest Children's Art/Writing contest. Good work has been done and the project is shaping up. It will ask children , ages 5-15 to illustrate and/or write about what they love most about Monterey as a place to live, visit, or vacation. Material is being prepared for distribution so that work will be ready to be judged prior to Monterey Fest. All participants will receive awards and certificates for submitting their work.
In connection with, and as preparation for, the above, the committee plans to have a workshop, presented by Peggy Reeves in late June, which will help children with ideas and skills to do their projects. Peggy has done this type of event before and from reports, the children have a blast along with the learning process.
Finally, Kit and Wendy are going to contact area musicians with the idea that, rather that ending the Pot Luck Suppers for the Season, an additional supper be held, with great music to follow (and perhaps before and during). The Pot Luck organization folks will be contacted to determine if this event could be held, with possible date of June 20. The Council has funds available for this event and others mentioned above. Those held prior to 6/30/12 will be funded by fiscal 2012 and subsequent events by fiscal 2013. Efforts will also be made, subject to availability, to involve the new Monterey General Store in some of the events.
Respectfully submitted,
John Heffernan (for Lynne Leavitt)
