Local Cultural Council Minutes 1/12/09
Monterey Cultural Council

Minutes of meeting: January 12, 2009

Monterey Cultural Council Meeting
Monday, January 12, 2009

Attending: Maureen Banner, Dianna Downing, Laury Epstein, Neil McGinnis, Joel Schick

1. We made our grant decisions final, so that we can notify the Mass Council before the January 15 deadline. We prepared the acceptance packets for the succesful applicants.

2. We discussed some possible events for the coming year. Some possibilities are:
WORKSHOPS: Chocolate (Josh Needleman); Herbs (Jane Kasten); Abstract Art
or Beginning Drawing (Julie Shapiro); Bird Walk/Bird Talk (Joe Baker)
CONCERTS: Liz Queler & Family; Trillium
OTHER: Photo Show & Contest; Plant Exchange; Monterey Made: Arts & Crafts
Studio Walk

We’d like to have the herb workshop early enough in the spring to make it possible for people to use their new knowledge for this year’s herb gardens. Laury will talk to Jane Kasten about her interest in leading the workshop and her ideas about scheduling.

The Liz Queler concert must be based on the availablity of Liz’s husband, who is still tied up with Hairspray on Broadway. Apparently there are still a couple shows open on Broadway. Joel will contact Liz about their schedule. We must also plan this show so that it will not compete with anything the General Store may present this summer.

We hope to have the Photo Show on the Labor Day weekend. Joel will ask Liz Goodman about using the Church basement that big weekend. If it’s okay, we’ll start to publicize the event in the next Monterey News.

We’d like to hold Monterey Made on Thanksgiving weekend, so that people can buy local crafts for holiday gifts. Our notion is that artists will open their studios for the event, to obviate a large central venue, and to save artists from schlepping their work back and forth.

Next meeting: Some time in February--State budget cuts will probably affect the amount of money we can actually grant. Therefore, we’ll need to meet and decide how to spread the pain around. MCC expects a final decision around Feb. 2. We’ll schedule a meeting as soon as we actually get word from the MCC.
