Local Cultural Council Minutes 5/22/08
Monterey Cultural Council
Minutes of meeting: May 22, 2008
Attending: Joe Baker, Maureen Banner, Dianna Downing, Kathryn Roberts, John Heffernan, Marion Simon, Laury Epstein, Neil McGinnis, Joel Schick, Julie Shapiro
1. BIRD TALK/BIRD WALK. Plans are set for Richard Guthrie’s visit. Bird slide talk, Q&A session: Friday, May 23, 6-8 p.m. in the Church basement (MCC will provide refreshments from the General Store). Bird walk: Saturday, May 24, 7 a.m., Diane’s Trail. The Bird Walk is fully-registered, with a waiting list.
2. PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP. Since Adrienne has neither confirmed nor denied the date, we decided to tell her that it is official and chiseled in stone: The Printmaking Workshop will take place on August 16, 10:30-12:30, in the Church basement. Costs will be split between the State Grant and our own Town Funds.
3. KAREN ALLEN EVENT. No one has heard from Kenn Basler about this. Joel will try yet again to get some information, and find out what we can do to help out.
4. BONNER’S NATURE WALK. Sunday, June 8, 10:30, at the Land Trust Trail on Mount Hunger Road. The event is already nearly full (12 people).
5. BRASS CONCERT. The Copper City Brass Quintet will play here on Sunday, July 27, 4:00 at the Church. We’ll pay them $400 from our Town Funds.
6. AFRICAN QUILT. Kathie Frome and Joan McVicker came again to discuss the quilt program. We decided that if they come to one more meeting, we’ll make them honorary members--and co-chairs. Kathie reported that there is trouble with the date of August 31, since the Select Board doesn’t want a big event on a holiday weekend--apparently fearing traffic gridlock. We decided to send a contingent of Cultural Councilors to the next Select Board meeting (June 2) to discuss this bizarre new policy.
Kathie checked with two drum groups. The Kripalu Drummers are good, and will do a performance and/or a community drumming event. And they won’t cost much. The only problem with them is that they’re definitely not African. Diada Diada actually is. They will perform an authentic African folkloric theater/dance program in full regalia. Very cool--but very expensive. Kathie thinks she may be able to get some help in covering the cost. Our question--unresolved at this meeting--is: Do we want one or the other, or can we have both?
7. DRAMATIC READINGS. Laury has talked with Hilary Deely about possibly directing a reading of Howard Zinn’s Rebel Voices. She didn’t think it a drama piece. Joel offered to see if Kent Godfrey, a theater guy new to Monterey, might be interested.
8. DONATION. We decided to give $200 to the Church, in thanks for the times they have let us have events there. We’ll all sign a card at the next meeting.
9. BEN LUXON POETRY. We decided that our best time for his event would be Columbus Day weekend--October 10-12. Joe will see if he is available then.
10. Dianna Downing agreed to be the new co-chair, so that Julie can step down from those reponsibilities. Joel will continue as the other co-chair through the next Grant Cycle. We decided to table discussion of plans and direction until the next meeting.
Next meeting: Thursday, June 4. 4:00 at Town Hall.
